Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Tungsten T is Palm's latest PDA offering--it's smaller, lighter and ships with the latest Palm OS.

The trend for PDAs at the moment seems to be for smaller, lighter and more feature-rich devices to appear at ever lower prices. Palm is certainly getting in on this act, with the Tungsten T running the most advanced Palm operating system yet, and coming in at a very attractive price.

What will probably grab your attention first, though, is the slider. This is a portion of the casing which slides up and down to hide and reveal the Graffiti area. It's a clever wheeze that allows the overall size of the hardware, with the slider up, to be very small indeed--a mere 102 mm tall, in fact, which makes the Tungsten T very pocketable. Even better, you don't actually have to pull the slider down unless you want to use Graffiti thanks to the five way cursor on the front of the casing, which can be used to navigate most applications.

The Tungsten T runs Palm OS version 5 which includes several advances over version 4. It allows for a 320 x 320 pixel resolution screen without any software enhancements being required, and there is a voice recorder with its own record button on the left side of the device. MP3 playback is also catered for and there is a headphones jack – though sadly Palm has not included a player so you'll have to choose one of the third party players currently available. Importantly for anyone into communications the Tungsten T has Bluetooth built in, and Palm OS 5 supports 802.11b which you could add at a later date via the SD card slot.

For all the new features, Palm has not made any attempt to change the general look, feel or functions of it PDA software suite. You still get the standard software – Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, Not Pad, Clock, Calculator. The RAM remains at Palm's consistent 16MB too. This means the Tungsten T offers a great deal that is familiar, but also the very latest of what Palm has to offer. --Sandra Vogel

5.0 out of 5 stars Great piece of kit, 3 Nov 2002
I've had Palms for 5 years now (Palm Pro and PalmV) and this is superb. Screen is the best I've yet seen on a Palm (or on its big, well known competitors PDA's) - colours are true and really bright (not like the m505). The high resolution works well and is very easy on the eye. A few apps (well, mainly a few games) don't want to work in OS5 and I miss a few of my old hacks. Unit fits well in hand and the battery is ending a day of heavy useage with 75% power left. Voice recorder is handy and good sound quality. Can't play mp3's on it yet as Palm have released it before the mp3 player software is ready. They say this will be a free download soon. The slider works better than I thought and is very smooth. My only gripe is the lack of case supplied. You get a see through, clip-on plastic cover which is a bit poor and a little fiddly. Am I glad I bought it? Definitely.

5.0 out of 5 stars I finally bought a PDA and this was it, 26 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Other reviews have gone into details, but I wanted to add a note about comparisons.
I think I've tried every major PDA release and none of them convinced me I needed a PDA. I normally work with an ultraportable notebook (Samsung NV5000) which goes with me everywhere, and I didn't see the point. Earlier PDAs were simply too slow, too memory restrictive, and in the case of PPC, too big.
All the Microsoft products have an OS which to me seems to be geared to tablet PCs when they are mainstream - too complex, trying to make a tiny screen like a desktop.Oh, and not Mac compatible.
The Sonys are nice if you are a non-business end user, geared to Sony's audiovisual bias. But for business use, too many unused features.
My worry about integrated phones is that if one device fails all your options are down. I feel more secure having data and capability spread over several small devices, and Bluetooth makes this easy.

What convinced me to buy to Tungsten was:
It was as small as it could be and still do the job (but it's satisfyingly solid even if it does need a secure case)
The screen is excellent (actually higher res than the Compaq 3970)
Graffiti is now actually good enough that I can't see the point of tiny keyboards (lack of thumb skills I fear, plus fear of RSI)
Bluetooth
Documents to go is simply excellent, the full version unlike the cut down version on Sonys. It can also read Appleworks (I use macs as well as PCs)

GRIPES:
I can see why no case is included - different folks need different types - but (as someone who once went in for dirt bike riding) replaceable screen surfaces are a must and Palm should supply them. My worry about extensive graffiti use is how quickly the screen will wear out. I'm sure Palm could team up with a manufacturer of screen films who would be delighted to include a trial pack and an order form in the box.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Tungsten T (aka m550 palm handheld)., 9 Jan 2003
By Blethook (England) - See all my reviews

I recently purchased Tungsten T ...in order to upgrade from the m500 Palm unit. My primary reason for the purchase is the color screen. I use PDA primarily for storing addresses, sending and receiving emails when travelling, and occasionally also documents and spreadsheet editing. I wanted to stay with Palm product because I already have many of the Palm accessories (keyboard, modem, etc.).
My findings on the Tungsten so far include:
Pros:
- Very nice color screen and resolution. Even when you're just reading emails, it's much better to see things in color.
- compact design with sliding door; It's different from the previous m500 series.
- Comes with built-in bluetooth, in addition to the IR.
- If you're upgrading from the previous m500 series, the accessories that you may already have (e.g., modem, keyboard) can still be used with the Tungsten. If you use the older keyboard (the one before the super thin keyboard), you'll need to download the driver from the Palm website.
- Comes with 16 MB memory (actually 14 MB, after they had installed the basic software in the unit).
- Comes with built-in voice recorder, which is handy to have at times.

Cons:
- The color screen comes with a price: Battery consumption. Additionally, the color screen is impossible to see without backlight. It is the backlight that consumes so much battery power. To conserve the battery, keep the backlight to the minimum.
- The unit is thick!! When put side by side to my m500, it's almost twice as thick. When you put this in your pocket you will definitely feel the weight of the unit, unlike the m500.
- I don't know what Palm was thinking, but the flimsy transparent plastic cover that comes with the unit really doesn't belong in the same box with the unit. For USD 400+ per unit, you would expect something much better than the plastic cover that they supplied! I think it would be better if the unit had come with a pouch (like the one the use with the old HP calculators). I decided to buy the hard aluminum case to protect my unit.
- The OS5 doesn't offer much of an improvement. Also be careful. Some programs that run on OS4 will not run on OS5.

Also comes in the box with the unit is a bundle of software in addition to the Palm Desktop software for synchronizing with your PC. Come to think of it, the purposes that I use my PDA for, the m515 will do the job just as well, and if you have to have bluetooth capability, then you can also purchase the bluetooth card.
Overall, the Tungsten is a good and solid PDA. If you're a die-hard Palm fan, then Tungsten is a good reason to stay with Palm. But if you're purchasing PDA for the first time...then you might want to look around and see all that's available out there.
