A tower of greatness., 15 Dec 2002
This marks the second in the Rings trilogy OST releases and like the first special edition release, it comes in a lovely high quality embossed leatherette hardback book-like case. The first was a deep red, this a dark shade of brown/green, with the enclosed booklet and enhanced cd, making for a rather lovely packaged piece of music. And what music is contained within, i had thought that Howard Shore had outdone himself with the first part in the trilogy, but here for the Two Towers he has created a spine tingling work of spellbinding scope and majesty, with vocal help from the likes of Emilia Torrin and Elizabeth Frazer amongst others that ranges from etheral beauty to sweeping thunderous battle. The superlative themes of the original are revisited here and then, and are added upon ten-fold: 'The Taming Of Smeagol' reprises the relaxed theme of the fellowship as a darker tone altogether as it slips into a 'Get Carter' reminiscent chime. To call 'The Riders of Rohan' celtic in sound would be a disservice as it is in another world altogether, 'The King Of The Golden Hall' echoes this. 'The White Rider' literally sounds like the second coming, as it rises to a magnificent triumphant peak of orchestral grandeur, 'Breath Of Life' is also lush in its scope of delivery. The soundtrack finishes proper with the heartbraking 'Samwise The Brave' which starts off as the happy ending you expect then dives into despair and doubt, leading straight into the staggeringly fantastic 'Gollum's Song' which words can barely desribe such a beautiful and quirky mix of sweeping strings and Emilia Torrin's unique vocal range. These are but a few highlights from a considerably wonderful recording, and the bonus track only found on this limted edition, the unreleased and quite soothing 'Farewell To Lorien' from the extended version of the Fellowship, only adds to this, which makes this fantastic and fairly scarce limted edition quite worthy of you time and money.
