These Kempff recordings from the 50s would grace anyone's historical collection. The heart of the set are the 5 Beethoven concerti recorded with Paul van Kempen wielding the baton. This as exalted, euphoric a set as you are ever likely to hear. The singing tone Kempff produces on his Bluethner is, despite the age of the recordings, utterly unforgettable. The Mozart concerti are wonderfully fluid and enjoyable too, as are the Liszt concerti and the Brahms. Perhaps the Schumann is the only weak link on the set. Not bad, but just lacking that something that the other pieces have. A real bargain.
