Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
With a title to strike fear into humble record-shop managers the world over, Steal This Album finds the anti-establishment edge of crazed American-Armenian metal dissidents System of a Down as finely honed as ever.

Although the album consists mainly of offcuts from the quartet's previous album, 2001's Toxicity, it seems that System are categorically incapable of writing sub-standard material: "Innervision" and "Streamline" bristle with death-metal heaviness and thrash virtuosity, while the mighty "Boom!" proves System's doom-laden message lies at the heart of their musical agenda, spoken-word snippets about Third World starvation and nuclear paranoia sticking up like razor-sharp shards between the broiling choruses.

What makes System of a Down truly peerless, however, is their skill at flipping genres in the blink of an eye. "Nuguns" boasts a solo that appears to be played on some archaic Eastern European stringed instrument, while the oddly touching "Roulette" finds vocalist Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian performing a vocal duet backed by acoustic guitar and keening violin.

Too good to be dismissed as a mere rarities compilation, Steal This Album should be considered a sister record to Toxicity, or at least an excellent stop-gap before the band's next hotly-anticipated instalment --Louis Pattison

CD Description
'Steal This Album' is a collection of previously unreleasedoriginal tracks from System Of A Down. Produced by Rick Rubin and System's guitarist Daron Malakian, it features tracksfrom the period before the signing of their American Recordings contract in 1995, to as recent as the 2001 Toxicity sessions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncommonly brilliant., 28 Nov 2002
System of a Down have always been an above average metal band. The sensational `Toxicity` LP began to give them meaning and purpose on the world stage,@and to be honest, most SOAD fans were probably trying to figure out where the band was going next.
Thankfully, "Steal this Album", is an especially rare rarities collection, in the sense that it could serve as a more than suitable follow-up album to "Toxicity". It has had virtually no publicity (in Tokyo, where SOAD are very popular, the release has come as a total surprise), and it has been wittily designed to look like a burnt CD-R, but I think this is SOAD`s defining work. It`s heavy, it`s raucous and Tankian is extremely blunt in his offensive sideswipes at political mishaps, nuclear testings etc.
An out-takes album, in most cases, shouldn`t really work, but you have to remember that this is, essentially, an album of out-takes from the `Toxicity` sessions. If `Toxicity` was brilliant, then the out-takes would probably be almost as good, if not better.
And better it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're not going to steal this album, then buy it - NOW!, 28 Nov 2002
Usually, albums of out-takes/rarities are of interest to diehard fans & completists only but SOAD don't do the 'usual'. Steal This Album ranks as an equal alongside their previous albums and shows the more varied styles evidenced on Toxicity. All the riffs are there, along with the stacatto guitar breaks and full on moshing moments as well as the occasional cello, Eastern European strings and, yes, even an acoustic number!
Serj Tankian's vocals show their full magnificent range from growling deep tones, through manic ranting and spleen venting shouting to soaring, passionate singing.
As soon as you hear the opening track, the anti-advertising 'Chic'N'Stu', (and no, it's not an ode to pizzas) quickly followed by 'Innervision' - as good a track as anything on Toxicity - you know this album is not going to disappoint. There's no let up in quality in the songwriting with their political and social comments to the fore, but avoiding the preacher-like pitfalls other bands fall into.
By the time the final, epic track 'Streamline' ends, you'll realise why SOAD are so much more than more than just another metal/hard rock band.. and then you'll want to play the album again... and again...and again...

5.0 out of 5 stars System keep impressing, 22 Nov 2002
I have been a big fan of system of a down since I heard there debut album a few years ago. With the great success of 'Toxicity' reaching number 1 in the us album charts and a worldwide growing fan base system of a down are now considered to be one of the biggest names in rock music. There new album 'steal this album' is as good if not better than anything they have done before. The songs date back to before they were signed up to the present day. With some songs from the 'Toxicity' recording sessions it is fate that this will be a hit album. The time span of the recording of these songs makes it an all round great album as it brings together all the different aspects of system of a downs song writing. The material is all new though. The album has been rushed into being released as some of the material was leaked onto the Internet earlier this year. This has not affected the album though and it is still very good. The name of the record was actually named 'steal this album' because they felt that their songs had been stolen of them when put onto the Internet. System of a down has not though provided a booklet with the album and there is no artwork except on the limited edition covers. The song lyrics and credits will only be available on there official website. The album has some great songs on it like 'chic n stu', which is about pizza pie. 'Bubbles' and 'f**k the system'. The whole record in fact is brilliant. While system of a down carry on creating brilliant music the world of rock is at benefit. The new album is a definite must have for anyone's CD collection.
