4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect companion., 15 Aug 2006
By M. Mabberley (Crawley, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Though not in the same league as Marcel Ophüls' sublime "The Sorrow and the Pity" (also available from Amazon), this little known movie does form a perfect companion piece and throws further light on one of the most controversial periods of French history.

Using archive newsreel footage, excerpts from propaganda films -made either by the German occupiers or in collaboration with them - and clips from contemporary cinema made under the watchful eye of the Nazi's, this documentary shows a further side of same story told by "The Sorrow and the Pity". That is, a nation under occupation.

One key virtue of this film is that it clearly shows the duplicity of Marshal Pétain. In Marcel Ophüls' film you see people speaking in defence of Laval and Pétain, trying to posthumously the clear their names. This film demonstrates why they weren't successful.

Most of the film is self explanatory, but narration is provided where necessary, to clarify the context of particular clips. Subtitled throughout. Unfortunately this film is currently only available in a Region 1 release.
