A winning disc of rewarding music, 15 May 2004
This is without doubt among Bartoli's best discs. The music too is lovely, and it is especially rewarding to hear Gluck's take on Clemenzo di Tito, - Bartoli and co make me want to hear the whole opera.String tone is, initially, a little aggressive, in period instrument fashion, but I found that the ear very quickly adjusts. I found, too, that it gave a lift and a life to the music which earlier performances of Gluck didn't always do. The Decca sound helps the adjustment to period instruments, for those not on the wavelength. Although its a PCM recording, rather than DSD, it was pretty good in its original incarnation, though not as good as the sound DG gave Magdelena Kozena in her Gluck (and Mozart) recital disc last year. In the SACD remaster it's come up pretty well (4*) without being 5* outstanding. It does serve Bartoli well enough for us to hear even more of her lovely performance and that's what counts. I haven't heard the multi-channel layer but the stereo imaging is fine. By the way, the SACD, like the CD, comes in a booklet-sized cardboard digi-pak "book". Its a superb presentation with a real feel of weight and luxury. The booklet itself is a fount of information. A superb example of the very best in presentation and added-value. Overall, this is a winning disc of rewarding music which is rarely performed in full operatic context, so we should be grateful to Bartoli (and Kozena and Susan Graham) for at least giving us arias. Now, - DHM, Erato and Universal and others: how about some of the non-standard Gluck operas (like Clemenzo di Tito)?? On SACD, please.
