A breath of fetid air into the squeeky clean goth scene, 20 April 2004

I had the pleasure of catching this band live at the Whitby Goth Fest in2003. They were the highlight of the weekend for me, and I immediatelysought out their album afterwards. As a goth rock band who wear theirwicked sense of humour on their sleeve, they are a rare jewel in a scenerapidly becoming awash with bland EBM artists who seemingly takethemselves far too seriously.
There are many highlights on this CD, such the title track ("What's thechurch doing? Nothing! It's a ****ing discrace!"), the Meatloaf-likehistrionics of 'P*ss all Over Your Grave' or the cover of the MunstersTheme, among others. If all they had was a nice line in mickey-take horrorhumour, the novelty might wear off pretty quickly, but thankfully theyknow how to pen a decent rock tune as well, and, by and large, carry itall off with aplomb. There are one or two tracks which could be consideredas fillers, but overall a great effort.

Unbelievably good self-deprecating Goth, 18 May 2007
I can't tell you how much of a joy it was to stumble across this band. They've put the biggest smile on my face for many a year.
Nearest comparisons are Half Man Half Biscuit and Pam Ayres; a Goth Half Man Half Biscuit & Pam Ayers gone to the dark side mind, but that's exactly what springs to mind. The humour is self-deprecating and very tongue in cheek, sweet almost, yet in no way disparaging of the Goth community. It's like Halloween at the Munsters rather than Leslie Nielsen's Dracula: Dead And Loving It.
The music is superb, the first and title track kicks off like demo tape early Bauhaus with Fire in Cairo Cure-isms sprinkled on top; it morphs from the verse into one of the greatest stadium rock choruses I've heard. Close your eyes and you can picture a stadium of Goths punching the air. And it's hilarious. And not only that, it bears repeated listening.
The anthems continue and the lyrics just get better and better. `Licanthrope...' has a werewolf as conductor on the bus to hell. `N£cr*fancy' is dirtier and altogether scarier than anything my favourite Grind Metal bands have managed. Pig Destroyer couldn't hope to be this disgusting!
I know how the idea of Pam Ayers doing vampire poetry must sound. And the thought of a Goth Half Man Half biscuit would set many a grave in the Wirral spinning. But honestly, the Scary B!tches take that knowing eye for detail and wrap it all up in a lovely spider's web of Goth.
It's brilliant. And their second album is just as good!

I just hope that I don't have to pay in blood, 12 Oct 2009
I discovered Scary Bitches by finding video of the title track of this album on youtube. Probably the first time I replayed a video on youtube as soon as it had finished, and certainly the first youtube link I've posted to friends.
Musically the landscape is wider than that of Creepy Crawlies but Lesbian Vampyres is just as witty, if not wittier as Creepy Crawlies. There's even a hint of Pam Ayres: "Be my dinner, lunch and tea / served with peas and celery" (You Always Eat the One You Love). There's a sense that they're finding their more of their own sound. The Cure plus Lene Lovich comparison I made for Creepy Crawlies is less appropriate here, with its wider soundscape.
P*** All Over Your Grave goes to such extremes of personal hatred that it becomes funny (as, no doubt, was the Scary Bitches intention). You'll End Up Looking Like the Scary Bitches has a wonderful moment in it: "long black dress made of satin and lace <snip> no son of mine's going out dressed like that"
If you liked Creepy Crawlies, you'll love this. And if you're in doubt, most, if not all, tracks are available for download on Amazon. If you're going to sample via MP3, try the title track or Grave.
