This is a simply brilliant set. Beethoven's ten Violin Sonatas (with the possible exception of the Op. 47 "Kreutzer" Sonata) get rather less attention than they deserve, in my view. They are wonderful works, full of the sparkle and passion you'd expect from Beethoven and, like the string quartets, they show what a fine composer of chamber music he was. Beethoven really understands the delicate relationship between violin and piano and writes beautifully for them, evoking real beauty and emotion without the need for the orchestral fireworks so often associated with him. They are really fine, enjoyable works.

And, of course, Isaac Stern plays them magnificently. He is one of the very finest violinists of the 20th Century and is at his best here. He has a wonderful understanding with Eugene Istomin and they produce a truly memorable set of these sonatas. I have had the original set for years and it has given me immense pleasure. This is a recording to last a lifetime, and at this absurdly low price for three CDs of truly great music you can't really go wrong.

Recommended in the warmest terms.
