Amazon.co.uk Review

There just seems to be no stopping U2, whose Best of 1990-2000 demonstrates exactly why they are still one of the world's greatest groups. For a band who reached their peak with Achtung Baby (10 years after catapulting themselves into the music industry), the 1990s offered U2 the chance to reinvent and reform their ideas and these videos showcase their range of influences and achievements during the decade.

Obviously treated with the same attention and care as a movie release, this compilation delivers every single video produced for the band in the 90s and--to add a U2-style cut above the rest stamp on the release--each track is accompanied by a director's commentary. The collection kick-starts with "Even Better than the Real Thing", with its amazingly audacious camerawork, and also includes the never-before-released "The Ground Beneath Her Feet", directed by Wim Wenders and featuring Salman Rushdie. The commentaries range in quality; from the mesmerising Anton Corbijn's "One", to the rather dull and pointless commentary on "Even Better than the Real Thing". The compilation is of course a must-have for any U2 fan, but also a welcome insight into the process of video-making.

On the DVD: U2: The Best of 1990-2000 offers the sound in near-perfect 5.1 Dolby Digital, but the 4:3 aspect ratio will disappoint widescreen TV owners. Aside from the directors' commentaries there are also three behind-the-scenes documentaries: for "One" and the latest video "Electrical Storm", as well as "Missing Sarajevo", which relates the story behind U2's historic concert in the Bosnian capital. --Celine Martig

5.0 out of 5 stars Great viewing from rock gods., 19 Nov 2003
Wow, what a great viewing experience! This DVD is great to watch. The videos are engaging, and very unique in style, totally enhancing the already great music. The videos vary greatly. There is great imagery in 'Beautiful Day', particularly when we see the plane rising over Bono's head in a 'I am God and control everything' fashion and 'Stay (Faraway, So Close!)', where we see Bono clambering over a towering statue in a (not so surprisingly) 'I am God and am unreachable' fashion. Confusion in 'Even Better Than The Real Thing' (I still can't get my head round that whole hand-knuckle thing). There is humour in 'Discotheque' - particularly the little village people cameo. You've got animation in 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me', where we see the band in cartoon form aswell as Bono fighting his alter-ego, MacPhisto. There's live footage in 'Gone', studio work in 'The Hands That Built America' and even sports themes in the american video of 'Stuck In A Moment'. And then, of course with them being U2, there are the downright moving videos (even if you don't understand them) - both videos to 'One' (particularly the one which has the band dressed as women - unusual, but powerful), 'Electrical Storm', where we see the hardships of love and 'Gone', where we see the band as guardian angels. There's also the added bonus of extra videos and different versions of the videos, as well as director commentaries and mini documentaries. Brilliant. You don't even have to be a fan of U2 to appreciate the quality of this DVD. Surpasses any other music DVD I've bought before. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Music DVD you have to have!!!!!, 30 Nov 2002
If you buy one music DVD this year (or next year), make sure its this. This DVD is a must have for all U2 fans and basically good music fans. Not only does it contain a perfect mix of music, from hard rock to smooth classics, but it demonstrates why U2 were the band of both the 80s and the 90s.

They once said that the 60s was the golden era of music: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. Well did any of these bands make good music after the 70s? U2, who have been making good music since the beginning of the 80s, continued to make music that recieved critical and commercial success. In this DVD package we see the transformation of the worlds most popular and successful band become, er, the worlds most successful and popular band in the world. But with a difference. U2 shot to success with albums like the Joshua Tree, which is a fantastic and breathtaking record. After this album U2 realised they wouldn't duplicate the success of this album unless they did something that other world famous bands had tried (and failed): Re-Invention.

December 31st 1989. U2 are performing at a concert when Bono addresses the crowd and the rest of the world that U2 were going away. Going away to "dream it all up again". Then comes Achtung Baby about 1 year later. People were surprised. But very happily surprised. Instead of writing about the joys of life U2 turned to more darker topics as illustrated in songs like "One", "Numb" and "Please" all inlcuded in this DVD. While some songs are not as clever as The Joshua Tree's, many are but in a very different way, that's why this collection of songs is such a delightful package. And instead of just getting videos, there are also mini documentries and commentaries on each song. And as an even better bonus, there are 7 hidden songs (mostly from the underrated Pop album).

If you are a music fan, this SHOULD be in your music DVD collection. Simply classic.
