I found Rosetta Stone's approach to language learning very useful, and the words, phrases and sentences I have learned have become second nature to me very quickly. This is of course, the main goal of learning a language, so you can become fluent, so words just come naturally without having to think. And I have no doubt that the approach taken here, of learning words through a combination of pictures, listening, speaking, reading and writing exercises is an excellent technique and really does work.

However, I'm impatient and want to learn more useful words and phrases sooner. The course not only takes its approach to learning from infancy, but also spends many lessons teaching you words for the infant, that will not be of immediate use for the casual adult traveller.

I also found the lack of explanations frustrating. The course is entirely in Portuguese, there is no English explanation of anything. You have to go to other sources - dictionaries, pronunciation and grammar guides - to get exact definitions or discussions of the differences between the languages. I think this is a failing in the course, because if I understand why something is the way it is, or can read around a subject, I learn faster.

Therefore, for the casual traveller, it is vastly over-priced and will disappoint in its timescales. This really is only an option for the serious language student, and even then it is over-priced as you will need plenty of companion material to help fill in the gaps.
