Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Learn a new language with the award-winning method used by the U.S. State Department to train diplomats. Proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers, and millions of students worldwide, the Rosetta Stone Language Library teaches new languages faster and easier than ever before.

We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency.

This comprehensive program provides up to 550 hours of mastery instruction in listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking. Systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists or drills. Previews, exercises, and tests accompany every lesson, and there are automated tutorials throughout the program. Graphical speech recognition displays your voiceprint and compares it with the native speaker to help improve your pronunciation. (Ages 6 and older).

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable alternative, 14 May 2007
I am finding this course to be great fun, although some may find it repetetive. New phrases/words have to be learnt by trial and error and they are repeated often. You may even find you haven't learnt that much until you near the end of the course. However, as you near the end you will begin to realise just how much you know. I am half way through the 2nd course and am starting to find my feet.

One danger of the course is that you may get slightly the wrong end of the stick when guessing what something means, but hopefully you'll have a eureka moment later when it pops up in a different context. I often can't help looking up what something means, but you aren't actually encouraged to do that.

For those who may be interested there is a demo on the Rosetta stone website which allows you to try a variety of the lessons before shelling out your hard earned. Also, their website allows you to "buy" access to the courses online for much less than it costs to buy the CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new way of language learning, 27 Sep 2005
By A Customer
Having tried to learn French at school and having attended evening classes last year, it was a real revelation to find an online course that allowed me to learn quickly and easily in my own time and at my own pace! The courses use pictures and images and use no translation really helped me pick up the language quickly; what's more it was interactive and fun! I would highly recommed Rosetta Stone to anyone who has a real desire to learn a second language - it is so simple and easy; I can't wait to get to the next level!

1.0 out of 5 stars Absurdly expensive., 2 Aug 2007
By G. L. Sutcliffe "glsutcliffe" (Dorset, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
These Rosetta Stone programs are about 4 times more expensive than other more effective options and offer no added value for the extra money. Too much focus on vocabulary, shallow grammar, and not much help with the main objective of language learning, i.e. practical use of it. It seems to be full of gimmickry, e.g. speech recognition, multimedia, in place of substance.

The price seems to be aimed at people who assume that quality is proportional to price. This is woefully not the case.

Take it from a linguist of 5 fluent languages: buy a competent bilingual dictionary and a good grammar/exercise book/Audio CD combination. It will cost you a quarter of the price and teach you much more.
