4.0 out of 5 stars Great for learning the language but not the culture, 30 Dec 2005
By Dr. Sahib Bleher - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I looked at the Arabic module as someone who uses and teaches Arabic as a second language and found the courses extremely well designed, minus a few inconsistencies where the written and spoken version did not fully agree with each other and one occasion where the answers had been allocated wrongly. Some of the images are a little dated and one of the advanced chapters consisted entirely of humorous cartoons and thus become quite tiring as instead of concentrating on the language I constantly found myself trying to figure out what the cartoonist wanted to say. In the end I skipped that chapter.
All in all, however, I found the modules a superb method of acquiring a new language which, although not exactly cheap, should do wonders for the teaching of foreign languages if more widely used.
Yet, I have one major criticism: Localisation seems to the
be a word or concept totally absent from the program makers
vocabulary. The images used represent American suburbia
throughout, and whilst it may appear reasonable to re-use them for West-European languages due to the close proximity of cultures, they seem strangely out of place when learning a language from further afield. Language immersion should also immerse the learner in a foreign culture, and in this respect the courses fail abysmally: There are plenty of cowboys but not an Arab to be seen in the Arabic course, nor are certain cultural sensitivities taken into account. On one occasion a picture shows an open book and asks whether this was the beginning or the end of the book, missing entirely the fact that with Arabic being written from right to left books open from the other end.
In this respect I found the product strangely stuck in the pasat for a progressive method of language delivery.
