2.0 out of 5 stars No passion, 20 Jul 2003
By A Customer
The notes of this DVD state that this is the first time Corella and Ferri danced together on stage and it certainly shows. They have little rapport and while they dance well individually (during their solos), their partnering was awkward. The flowing momentum of Macmillan's choreography simply never gets going and Romeo's frozen smiles are no substitute for intensity. The overall production was also disappointing; the La Scala corps dancers are not very good and Macmillan's choreography has been subtly altered (for example, a solo generally performed by Mercutio is here performed by a mandolin player). Also, the sets are spare and the costumes look shabby.

It's really too bad that this is basically the only contemporary full-length performance of Macmillan's version of Romeo and Juliet available on DVD/VHS. Nevertheless, because this production is so inferior to those by ABT or the Royal Ballet, I'd much rather see a well-performed excerpt, such as the balcony scene performed by Ferri and Julio Bocca on the DVD "American Ballet Theatre Now". Otherwise for an alternative full-length performance I prefer the somewhat less contemporary (but still good) 1984 Royal Ballet production (with Ferri and Wayne Eagling) on VHS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate!, 16 Dec 2002
This ballet is such a delight to watch! The romance and chemistry between the Angel Corella (Romeo) and Alessandra Ferri (Juliet) is so moving, convincing and passionate. Needless to say, my feet and body felt like dancing and moving as well when I watched them perform. Their movements and steps in all their duets were swift, lively and full of grace. However, it seems slightly funny when they keep smiling to each other.

Other characters were also well played. This includes Mercutio and Benvolio, Romeo's friends, who were potrayed as being playful, cheeky and liking to look for trouble, besides Tybalt, the scary and stern looking cousin of Juliet. Generally, I felt that the casting was successful.

The only fault in this DVD was at the beginning of the show during the narration; the subtitles were not inserted well together with the background scene (when English subtitles appear, the background scene became black).

However, this DVD is a good investment for ballet lovers. You get to watch the ballet as much as you like, and to allow yourself to be immersed with the story and tragic love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 4 Nov 2004

There is a lot of passion in this ballet and you can see it. The dancers are fantastic, very skilled, very sensual and expressive.
Alessandra Ferri has reached a maturity beyond her age and beyond any expectation. No wander why she is an acclaimed international star and prima ballerina at the Alla Scala theatre in Milan! Corella's performance is also outstanding.
The balcony scene is the best pas de deux I have ever seen, the death of Romeo and Juliet will make you cry.
Watch it, feel it, love it.
