Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Cubasis VST v4.0 from House of Steinberg is a pretty nifty software package for anyone wanting to do the home studio thing. It features 48 audio channels, both MP3 and Wave, and 64 MIDI tracks. There is a video-editing suite for the vastly ambitious. A bonus CD comes complete with 600 MB of samples and tracks. There's also a satchelful of special sonic effects, including reverb, twang and wah-wah. The Voice Detective allows you to record your own dulcet tones, which you can then mix on to the central console with the professional mixer.

The CD-ROM comes with an interactive tutorial to guide you through the trickier moments. These might include using the virtual instruments such as Easy Guitar and the "singing monk" Brother Gregory. This is a rather decent, dependable, do-it-all home studio kit, one of the better ones on the market. --Sean Thomas

3.0 out of 5 stars Good value and decent features for the price, 29 April 2003

I'm new to PC recording software so cannot compare this product with others in the same genre but have to say I'm quite happy with it so far. The music I'm trying to create is largely orchestral and the range of samples provided in that area is good with some exceptions; some of string instruments are quite poor which is a shame - the violin is an example of this - but many are perfectly usable. Further investment may be necessary here to give you the full range.

The interface isn't the best - everything seems to be there but not necessarily where you would expect to find it, so intuitive is not really a word I'd apply here. There is little printed documentation provided - it's all on-line help - so getting going can take a while. If you're not used to PCs and the Windows interface then you face a tricky learning curve. However, I'm sure this is equally true if you bought a hardware studio - and that would cost you far more.

Having made these criticisms I do have to say that as musical drafting tool - to get ideas onto the drawing board and advanced to a reasonable degree - and at the price, it's a good buy. OK, if you're a pro then you'll want more, but then you'll be prepared to pay more too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing after all the hype, 17 Dec 2002

After all I've heard about Cubasis I was expecting alot more. It seems klunky and hard to use, when I'm trying to get my ideas recorded fast the last thing I need is to be clicking on windows to find the right buttons, or closing things down because it's all go too cluttered. The instruments sounded quite good, although I'm pretty sure that a singing monk isn't the first thing musicians would have asked for. The 'voice detective' was nearly useless. Inputting MIDI thorugh a microphone just didn't work, I'd have been much quicker to do it by hand from the start. Technology for technology's sake! I've used other music programmes in the past, and I will be going back to them rather than battle on with Cubasis. I'm not going to mention which ones, but there is better software available for cheaper.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK, but no cigar, 17 Dec 2002
By A Customer
Good, but I could not get vocals to record properly, they always came out very flat and unispired. I also found the interface was a bit confusing and hard to come to terms with, there are so many options that seem to me to be in the wrong place.
