4.0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic Hypnosis, 21 Jan 2003
By Mrs. E. A. Molloy (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A series of seemingly unprovoked and bizarre suicides occur, the victims uttering "The Green Monkey" before offing themselves. A young hypnotist teams up with a world-weary policeman to unravel the mystery.
Meanwhile a young woman believes she may be next and begs a TV hypnotist to help her - he agrees, but proceeds to exploit her on his programme.
Just when you think you've nailed down the plot it slithers away from you again. The twists and turns keep you on your toes, and as with many of these sorts of films you never know who to trust.
If you're already a fan of Asian cinema, this is one you should add to your collection. It has shades of 'Ring' about it, but is really a completely different sort of film.
If you've only ever seen the sort of product churned out by Hollywood - change your ways! This is as good a place to start as any.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Jap movie - Shame it wasn't scary, 18 May 2006
This was purchased as part of a "Modern Japanese Horror" box set along with "Pyrokenisis". I really enjoyed this movie although feel very much that it's been misclassified as a horror - it's much better described as a thriller. The plot is genuinely original and there are a good few surprises involved although I found some parts confusing. There were a couple of instances that I found - as I have with other Asian movies - where I cannot understand the behaviour of some of the characters but this could be down to a culture difference. Amusing in places - outrageous in others - but overall a very good watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars goro goro goro ..., 16 Feb 2004
Umm ... yeah.

I have to admit that when I watched this movie, in Japanese, without subtitles, for the first time, I was only watching it because Goro-chan's in it. And he does take some of his clothes off, so I guess it wasn't an entirely wasted experience. I think he should stick to singing though (for those of you who don't know Smap, that's not a compliment).

The story follows Goro-chan as he "helps" detectives find the reason why a whole load of people who seem to have no connection are randomly killing themselves in (sometimes quite amusing) horrible ways. It's not a bad story line but (even if you only understand one tenth of the words coming out of their mouths like I did) you'll probably find yourself gettting frustrated about how stupid they are in not working out the mystery... I don't want to give too much away.

If you're a fan of Goro, it's worth watching. If you're a fan of cheesy Japanese horror movies, it's worth watching. And if you're strong stomached and just want to have a good laugh, fast forward to the last ten minutes or so and watch Goro-chan running around with his hands over his ears while his girlfriend chases him with a big pole.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ahem Ahem
Love Asian films but this is way too cheesey, wasn't impressed. There are parts that are watchable but some of the dying scenes etc are abit hideous. Read more
