Synopsis

With I'M GOING HOME, Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira presents a tender film about the zest for life that gives the human spirit resilience in the face of hardship. Michel Piccoli stars as Gilbert Valence, an aging actor who is in the prime of his career, enjoying his pick of prominent roles in both theater and film. During a performance of Exit the King by Eugene Ionesco, with Valence's king weeping over his lost throne, three men arrive backstage to deliver some terrible news: Valence's wife and two children have been killed in a car accident. Saddened but undefeated, Valence continues with the simple daily activities that bring him joy. Each morning he watches his young grandson, Serge (Jean Koeltgen), running off to grade school. He sits in his favorite cafe at his favorite table at the same time each day and drinks coffee. He delights in looking at the monuments of Paris at Trocadero, Place de la Concorde, and the Eiffel Tower. He wanders the grand boulevards, stopping to buy himself a new pair of shoes. A role in The Tempest keeps Valence busy, and when he's at home he plays children's games with Serge. But then his luck turns. His Paris streets become shadowy and dangerous. His agent forces him into a last-minute casting of an English-language film of James Joyce's Ulysses, directed by John Crawford (John Malkovich). And as Valence begins to feel overwhelmed and unhappy, he quickly changes his situation. "I'm going home. I want to rest," he says, and does just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely out of the box!, 5 Nov 2002
This amazing movie from Manoel Oliveira takes you to where he wants to.
Follow the story of an old man who loves theatre and has a platonic vision of it. Although, he makes an attempt to do a play that can brings him a better life.
Amazing, the way Manoel Oliveira makes you look to the most unusal details and emotionaly links you to the movie, turning the espectator a lively part of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, 3 Jan 2007
I bought this film originally as I was increasing my Catherine Deneuve DVD collection, however she is only in it for the first ten minutes, however it is a good performance. However it is Michel Picolli who carries the film, his superb acting is a joy to watch.
THe film is slow moving, in fact very little happens, it is more a brief exploration of an old man's feelings towards life, work and ageing. I would recommend it, however don't expect a fast pace or any action.
The director uses many long shots, often representing the audience in a theatre or a camera on a film set, at other times he choses to show a long shot of Picolli's foot whilst he is talking rather than the actor himself, this in fact works remarkably well.
The DVD has english subtitles, is approx 83 mins long. The subtitles are not in the clearest font, however they are readable and fairly accurate as subtitles go. In fact some of the film is spoken in English, such as Malcovich's role.
A charming little film, that slowly ambles along.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just what it says on the tin., 24 May 2003

First of all make sure you've read the synopsis above...because that is it! There is very little story line in this film. It is really a character study of an aging actor which Piccoli plays brilliantly, but as a film it goes nowhere. The opening scene is ten minutes of a play he is starring in which, considering the length of this film takes up too much time to make its point. Valance, Piccoli's character, doesn't relate to the other characters and this makes it difficult to empathise with him. I was left with that unsatisfied feeling at the end of this film even though there is really not much at fault as a piece of film making...it simmply does what the synopsis says, nothing else.
