Product Description

From the Back Cover

One of France's greatest screen stars, Michel Piccoli, plays Gilbert Valence, a grand old theatre actor, who is given the shocking news that his wife, daughter and son- in law have been tragically killed in a car accident. Some time later, and over the worst of his grief, Valence busies himself with his daily life in Paris, turning down unsuitable roles in low brow television productions and caring for his nine- year old grandson. But when an American filmmaker (John Malkovich) absurdly miscasts him in an unlikely adaptation of Joyce's "Ulysses', Valence finds himself suddenly compelled to make a decision about his life. Piccoli's performance is the warm and engaging heart of veteran director Manoel de Oliveira's dryly witty and touching observations on art and ageing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely out of the box!, 5 Nov 2002
This review is from: I'm Going Home [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
This amazing movie from Manoel Oliveira takes you to where he wants to.
Follow the story of an old man who loves theatre and has a platonic vision of it. Although, he makes an attempt to do a play that can brings him a better life.
Amazing, the way Manoel Oliveira makes you look to the most unusal details and emotionaly links you to the movie, turning the espectator a lively part of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, 3 Jan 2007
This review is from: I'm Going Home [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
I bought this film originally as I was increasing my Catherine Deneuve DVD collection, however she is only in it for the first ten minutes, however it is a good performance. However it is Michel Picolli who carries the film, his superb acting is a joy to watch.
THe film is slow moving, in fact very little happens, it is more a brief exploration of an old man's feelings towards life, work and ageing. I would recommend it, however don't expect a fast pace or any action.
The director uses many long shots, often representing the audience in a theatre or a camera on a film set, at other times he choses to show a long shot of Picolli's foot whilst he is talking rather than the actor himself, this in fact works remarkably well.
The DVD has english subtitles, is approx 83 mins long. The subtitles are not in the clearest font, however they are readable and fairly accurate as subtitles go. In fact some of the film is spoken in English, such as Malcovich's role.
A charming little film, that slowly ambles along.

First of all make sure you've read the synopsis above...because that is it! There is very little story line in this film. It is really a character study of an aging actor which Piccoli plays brilliantly, but as a film it goes nowhere. The opening scene is ten minutes of a play he is starring in which, considering the length of this film takes up too much time to make its point. Valance, Piccoli's character, doesn't relate to the other characters and this makes it difficult to empathise with him. I was left with that unsatisfied feeling at the end of this film even though there is really not much at fault as a piece of film making...it simmply does what the synopsis says, nothing else.
