Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
Strike Fighters is a multi-faceted flight simulation that features one of the most versatile combat aircraft off all time--the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. At its heart, this is traditional combat flight simulation--you take command of a thundering jet fighter and engage in aerial dogfight with enemy fighters while seeking ground targets.

The sim is set in the 1960s--when aviation technology was still primitive, but advancing at a rapid pace. Some missiles and guided weapons only become available as you progress through the sim, but true to history they remain somewhat unreliable and inaccurate. Most air battles involve visceral, "in your face" gunfights and the players skill at outmaneuvering his opponents remains the key to victory and survival.

Strike Fighters is based on all-new 'next gen' graphics engine using DirectX 8.1. The graphics engine, developed by Third Wire, is optimised for rendering scenes with a high poly count and in 32-bit colour. The player aircraft alone have exceptional detail, with over 5,000 polygons each! As you'd expect, advanced graphic features are incorporated such as coloured point light-sourcing, spectacular highlighting, multi-layer textures, bump mapping and reflective environment mapping.

An advanced terrain engine uses both fractal and digital elevation map to give the best possible effect at both high and low-level action.

The campaign can be played normally, where you take on the role of an air force pilot. In this traditional role, you are rewarded for a successful career with medals and promotions. In addition, you may also take on a role of mercenary pilot; this adds another dimension to the gameplay by allowing you to build up your pilot's abilities, resources and finances. Earn money for target destruction and mission accomplishment and use the profits to buy ammo, fuel, fix battle damage, upgrade the aircraft or buy bigger and better armament. This optional element of role-playing adds a whole new dimension to the traditional combat simulator.

In addition, Strike Fighters also features Instant Action and Single Mission modes of play. Instant Action immediately puts you into the cockpit with a single mouse-click, while Single Mission enables you to design custom missions and pilot your favourite aircraft.

Finally, Strike Fighters has been developed with the flight sim community in mind and supports mods and total third-party expandability and add-ons. Full tools will be made available on release--already additional projects are underway including French Mirage III and a US F-105 Thud aircraft and a new theatre map based on the Vietnam conflict.

Set in one of the most popular jet fighter eras, you can literally tailor Strike Fighters to be the type of combat sim YOU want to fly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bridge that gap!, 24 May 2003
By A Customer
This simulator brilliantly bridges the gap between WW2 flight sims and modern jet sims.

The action takes place in the 1960s when guided missiles were in their infancy. All-aspect missiles were few and far between. Infra red missiles were easily distracted. This means that dog fighting is very like WW2....You have to get on your opponent's tail. The idea is to shoot your "heater" right up his tail pipe from under half a mile. You often have to resort to guns as your missile misses it's mark.

It makes for fast and furious dogfighting in a variety of aircraft rarely found on flight sims...A4 Skyhawk; F100 Super Sabre; F104 Starfighter and F4 Phantom.

. The graphics of the aircraft are gorgeous. Close ups reveal detail inside the undercarriage wells. External views reveal your pilot moving his head around looking for bandits.

Unlike many sims, sound hasn't been neglected. The radio chatter sounds authentic. There are excellent engine noises and roar of the afterburners is superb!

I own over 20 flight sims and found this sim one of the most rewarding and fun that I've experienced...OK.. It's less serious than the marvellous IL2 series but tough enough and realistic enough for big Flight Sim fans, if you want it to be.

Buy it! You won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Blow away the bogeys..., 5 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Beyond Visual Range combat is all well and good but if it's just too clinical and precise then this is the perfect opportunity to really get immersed in the jet wash from a selection of 1960s fighter aircraft.

You close in for the kill and unleash the full power of your F4's externally mounted gun pods, trying to stay focused and control the adrenaline as your wife screams at you from the control tower, or kitchen...

The controls are complex but you probably only need to know the basic flight and weapons controls to start enjoying the game. The individual aircraft all handle with realism and progressive levels of manouverability. Would reiterate other reviewers comments that you definitely get a sense of brute force, especially from the F104.

This is one of the few military flight simulations I have found which models the terrain in sufficient detail to actually give an impression of speed at low level as you tackle strike missions in the agile A4 Skyhawk.

Haven't tackled a full campaign yet, but the only glitches so far are occassionally jerky graphics when the game is on default settings, running on a Dell 2.0GHZ with 64MB graphics card & 512K RAM.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, 6 Nov 2005
I bought this game in 2002 due it being one of the few to have Vietnam era aircraft in it. The 3D models of the planes were amazing then and the terrain although bland at see level was passable compared to other sims I had used. With this game you must install the latest patches (service pack 3 is the latest) to get a stable game owing to the original relese looking slightly unfinished and buggy.
I have now had a few years of quite enjoyable flying with this sim - its not ultra realistic but there is enough there. One thing with this is that you have to learn what all the dials in the cockpit represent because there were no good head up displays back then. Also the documentation is very limited so an understanding of some of the weapons has to come from external sources. The bombing is all done manually and takes practise - yet again you have to get some tutorials from www.simhq.com to learn this.
Any one thinking of buying this game should get its predessesor 'Wings over Vietnam' which is basically the same game with better graphics, more features, More planes, and more stability - and carrier take offs!
