Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Palm's decision to split its product line into two has resulted in some new product names: Zire is the new name for the consumer family of devices.

First, the Zire scores very highly in the looks department, with its eye-catching white fascia design. It's light too, at just 109 grams. The Zire has been designed for newcomers to the PDA world and has been kept as uncomplicated to get to grips with as possible. To that end, there are just two application shortcut buttons on the casing rather than the usual four. These open the Date Book and Address Book, stressing the fact that over and above everything else the Zire is an electronic diary. These buttons can be reassigned to launch other applications, as can the four that surround the Graffiti area, one of which is designated as a Favourites shortcut.

To help keep the price low, Zire is supplied without a HotSync cradle. A USB cable performs this task, and also recharges the internal lithium-ion battery, which Palm says should last for three to four weeks for the average user. You get a mains adaptor for those times when you are away from your PC. Palm Desktop is supplied, but if you'd rather store your contacts and diary in Outlook you can use the supplied PocketMirror software which will synchronise Outlook with the Zire's applications.

The 2MB of RAM may seem a bit on the small size compared to other PDAs, but it's plenty enough for everyday use as an electronic diary. Unfortunately, it can't be augmented as there are no slots for memory cards. If you think you are likely to want to install extra applications, it could be a drawback. The mono screen is pretty good, though it may let you down in dingy indoors conditions, and the processor, while slow by modern standards, is fine for general PDA functions.

The Palm Zire is small, light and fully-functional. If you are on a tight budget and are looking for a basic PDA, Zire fits the bill. --Sandra Vogel

Manufacturer's Description

0Put paid to your paper organiser and stay on top of your day at work, school or home with the small, stylish Zire handheld from Palm. Easy to use, great value and reliable, the Zire handheld keeps your appointments, addresses and notes in one place and at your fingertips.

The Zire is an elegant and sleek device--the lightest weight Palm handheld on the market at 109 grams. The distinctive polished white face and silver back lends a visual simplicity and elegance. The handheld comes with a removable flip lid to protect the 160 x 160 monochrome display screen while stored. The new two-button design focuses on what matters to first-time users, Address Book and Date Book, while providing an engaging look and feel.

The Zire is an easy way to carry the information you need, anywhere you go. Everything you need to get started comes in the package; rechargeable handheld, desktop software for the PC or Mac and cables. Entering information on a Zire handheld is easy--write with Graffiti (Palm's simplified alphabet), tap the on-screen keyboard or type your information into your computer and then transfer it onto your handheld.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zire - Simple & effective PDA ever had, 14 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Palm Zire - Amazingly Simple
Sold my ipaq 3660 - 64meg as it let me down badly over
xmas. Went on holiday and left ipaq at home, back 2 weeks
later and lost ALL 1000 plus contacts and pin numbers i had. I did back it up, but still annoyed that the whole pda just reset itself totally.

So bought what pda's were really about... a simple to use
device to store my addresses and reminders.... this device
has made my day. It is so simple:

1- easy to hotsynch and backup by pressing one button
2- low memory use, I have loaded all my addresses and games and still have 1.4 meg left. So who says 2meg is
not eneough.
3- no backlight, has'nt stopped me looking at it in low light, when are you ever going to be in a totally pitch black room.
4- used it for 4 hours each day for 3 days and still 100% battery, this is so important, the ipaq used to last 2 or 3 hours before the battery warnings came up. I can happily leave this unit away from the charger for over a month and still have 80% battery, cos unlike the ipaq it does not eat at your batteries even while switched off.

5- pda's were mainly for address book and calendar reminders, this does it via 2 buttons on the front panel.

6- I used to take my ipaq out occassionally cos it was expensive and bulky, i take my zire out everyday in my shirt pocket, cos its light and small.

7- another best is, while i am plugged into the usb port
this actually trickle charges my zire, what a simple but effective function. To date i hav never had the need to use the power supply adapter supplied with the unit.
I even took it on a weeks holiday and still had no need for it. The usb port is at the top, making it ideal for me to use and view my ipaq when plugged in.

8- Alot of people moan about the plastic cover, well i like it, cos its simple, does the job and even more important it is a non slip rubber unit, which when flipped back it acts like a tilt and view facility allowing you to view your ipaq while connected to your usb etc.

9- If you are looking for something cheap, easy to use, and will require minimal power source over a period, then surely this has got to be the one. How many times does mr.average use excel, word, media player, TV on a pda, why waste £400 - £500 on it, when all it will do is look good when you show it to your friends.

Having been a ipaq user for 2 years, I wish i had made the jump sooner. My 64meg on the ipaq was full of short movies just so that i could show off to friends. At least the 2meg on the zire is being utilised for me personally.Even though I have only used 0.4meg and thats only because i loaded 10 extra games for my kids when driving around, still have 1.6 meg for me, but i have already inputted all that i need, so how much more memory does a person really need.

The games are brilliant, okay i'm not going to get playstation 2 quality, but hey what do you get for [the price].
Do you really need a ipaq/sony clie... okay it looks sexy, but then thats about it.

Speaking from experience, most people will use a pda for contact details, online pin numbers, bank account details etc.. and reminders for birthdays, anniversaries etc..

Good luck and go for it !!

3.0 out of 5 stars Palm Zire, 21 Nov 2002
By M. Parker (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have recently bought a palm zire, and my first impression was that it was really good. It has a great design and the software on it is the basic 'what you need' things - date book, address book, notepad, expense tracker, memo pad and calculator.
When I started to download more software for it, I realised that two megabytes of memory isn't very much; there isn't even a memory card slot. Also, quite alot of games need four buttons, the Palm Zire only has two. Another drawback is that it has quite a slow processor. If you want to keep it basic, this is a good pda.

Pros:
Easy to use
Good design (very compact)
No fancy extras
Great battery time
Palm OS 4.1

Cons:
No backlight
No cradle
Only two buttons
Slow processor

4.0 out of 5 stars Zire, good? bad? ugly?, 25 May 2003
By A Customer
Definately a product with strengths and weaknesses.
The flip over cover is not good enough. The buttons can easily get pressed even with it on. Saying that It has not yet discharged and indeed the batteries seem to just go on for ever. I have not specifically charged it since the initial delivery, apparently it charges during hot sync. the syncronisation process is a doddle, fast and reliable. The supplied software for the PC is dead easy to use as is the Zire itself. I found I had to look up the strokes for some of the graffiti letters I use eg. @ and this was not easy to find in the manual but other than that I've just sussed it out and got along fine. I do not play games but heavily use the calender, to do list, and address book functions. They are excellently constructed I particularly like the editable fields for cartegorizing the contents of the various lists. I have parish work stashed in one place and shopping in another etc.
There is one drawback and it is the reason why I did not give the product five stars. The alarm is too quiet, much quieter than my mobile phone.
With this one exception I can heartily recomment the product for real use.
