5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning retrospective from beat masters, 20 Jan 2003
Laika - the band named after the astro-poodle who in 1957 blasted off into space in search of the 'intergalactic bone'. While this may have been a rather ill advised decision by the canine adventurer, there doesn't really seem to be anything about her musical namesakes that hasn't been thoroughly thought about first. You can tell from the beautifully presented inlay that the last 10 years have been a labour of love for Margeret Fielder et al. This is a two disc set - the first disc containing material from 1993-2002, the second disc containing remixes and live tracks. The album is an eclectic mix of trip-hop, ambient beats, and soulful poetry to lose yourself in. Whether it's the harrowing melancholy of "Breather" or the sarcastic love tribute "Shut Off/Curl Up", Laika have created an album that never fails to emote - theres even a song about masturbating in a telephone booth "Coming Down Glass".
I Laika double-disc set (sorry...), and I love this album.

3.0 out of 5 stars sneaky flutes, 22 Sep 2004
By radio atlantis "follow me not" (tha north of ireland) - See all my reviews
a little history; laika were formed when moonshake's bassist, producer and mags fiedler decided to do a runner.
this compilation sees their first three albums dissected for our listening pleasure. therein lie the problems one gets with any 'best of/ greatest hits' comps; variable track listings. the fun starts with the fact that some of the best tracks like 'thomas' and 'honey's in heat' are omitted and the more boring/ ambient ones (sugar daddy, remixes of if you miss and marimba song) get an ill-deserved airing. having said that, good to see 'red river' and 'coming down glass' launched on unsuspecting ears
the quality started to dip after the debut album as laika lost their edge and started getting more in tune with the coffee table set. that said, 'lying goat' and 'lie low' are decent while the quality of the unreleased tracks 'beestinger' and 'lower than stars' is up to 'silver apples...' standard. throw in a decent jack dangers treatment of a good track 'looking for...' and that's yer lot.
and mr frennet is still an excellent bassist

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite simply..., 3 Mar 2003
By Nick (Saf' London) - See all my reviews
... the best album I've heard in a long, long time. Dubby, jazzy, chilled - each track a blinder. If I had to make comparisons I'd struggle and would be doing Laika down - they're unique. I'm still listening to it over and over and each listen gets better. 2 CDs often means the second (remixes, rarities etc.) is a filler but in this case, I think the 2nd CD is better. Apart from the music, the other huge plusses are the fantastic, glossy sleevenotes and the fact that the electronics are complimented with real instruments ('proper' drums and guitars). Buy it.
