5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful lost classic of dew eyed pop, 6 Oct 2003
By nathanialmayweather (London, England) - See all my reviews
I was pretty stunned when I heard this album to say the least.
Stunned that I had NEVER heard of Mark and his music even though I am an avid fan of any music remotely orchestrated and pop based that stems from the golden age of the late sixties.
Stunned also to find the music was of such high quality, all songs completely self composed by Mark and complemented perfectly by Vic Briggs's arrangements. No producer/songwriter ala Curt Boettcher pulling the strings behind a collection of pretty, blue-eyed faces (even though he produced wonderful results).
No, this was different. A statement by one young man who bucked the current trend for political based folk or psychedelic acid rock to produce a minor classic that would be his lasting legacy.
I dare you to not feel that swell in your heart when you hear the aching 'Sad Is Just The Way I Feel' or the flawless, expert pop of 'Where Do The Girls Of Summer Go?'.
This is wide-eyed, spine tingling music of the highest order that in one minute makes you tremble with joy and in another leaves you reflective, as if you've shaken hands with a ghost.
His songs are a series of unresolved memories that linger in your mind with the regret of unfulfilled promise. A book with the last page unturned.
It's such a shame that this artist never fully realised his potential due to record company politics and a lack of promotional backing.
Rev-ola have done a great job on the re-issue (one of their best releases on the label in fact) with a nice set of liner notes, packaging and the obligatory bonus tracks where we get to hear five tracks that Mark recorded after the album, his last offerings from this period.
If you have even a passing fancy for the work of Brian Wilson, Millennium or The Association, please pick up this album and let Mark know that over 30 years later people do appreciate his art and this all too brief example of his talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magic find, 26 Aug 2005
By Bc V. Price "Bernard Price" (Bristol UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I came across this album quite by accident. All I can say is thanks to the marvellous rev-ola label for giving this gem a new lease of life.
If you like the Beach Boys circa Pet Sounds and Brian Wilson and the Wondermints then you will love this.
It captures that Californian sound of the period so well.
Mark Eric, deserves some recognition for this little masterpiece.
All twenty tracks are pure Gold and the sound quality is just superb. Don't hesitate buy it !

4.0 out of 5 stars Lost Classic that earns the title, 5 Feb 2004
It seems everywhere you turn there is some long lost masterpiece being unearthed, forgotten and ignored works of genius that were cruelly underrated at the time but now have another chance to be heard - and hopefully appreciated - by us modern, more savvy, music fans. A lot of these so called classics, however, turn out to be rubbish. The Yellow Balloon springs to mind as a particularly naff album that should have stayed in obscurity.
This album, however, does not dissapoint. Mark Eric was clearly (and unfashionably, at the time) obsessed with Pet Sounds, but this is no empty pastiche. There is a real voice in these songs - the sound of a young man hopelessly lost and watching sad eyed as the world as he knows it fades away around him - and at least two genuine pop classics ("Where do the Girls of the Summer Go" and the heartbreaking "Lynn's Baby")which are worth the price alone.
In the slightly crowded field of sunshine/west coast harmony pop, this cd stands out as a real gem, a deceptively simple album that you will keep coming back to over the years.
