Havergal Brian was always a bit of an oddity in 20th Century music. Probably best known for his massive first symphony (The Gothic - availble in a excellent version from Naxos) he produced much other rewarding music. On this set we get the charming The Tinkers Wedding Comedy Overture, which would make a good encore piece for an enterprising conductor. We also get the brief 31st symphony. He manages to say a lot in thirteen brief minutes. The heart of this set, however, is the 7th, 8th and 9th symphonies. The seventh is the last of his 'epic' symphonies. It is easily accessable for anybody familiar with the late romantic idiom. The eighth symphony takes a bit more effort on the part of the listener, but is very rewarding for those willing to let its charms in. Finally we have the ninth symphony. As with the eighth, it is played through without any breaks. From the opening adagio to the closing allegro moderato, its architecture is sometimes severe, but always melodic and approachable. This set represents probably the best introduction to this long lived composer (his creative life spanned 80 years, a span almost unmatched in music). The Gothic is arguably his greatest work, but you would probably be better off approaching that Everest of symphonies via this excellently performed and recorded set...

If anyone doubts that Havergal Brian is worth their time then here is the place to start. Two earlier LPs have been put together for a bargain introduction to a truly original talent. Brian may not be an unknown Delius or Elgar but he certainly deserves more than the slender entries found in most musical dictionaries. The most remarkable aspect of Brian's music is his unique approach to musical form, coupled with an extraordinary visionary quality in the handling of orchestral colour. Each symphony given here is a unique musical structure that repays careful and repeated listening. The first piece on the first disc is a cracking performance of "The Tinker's Wedding" from Mackerras which convinces that Brian can delight the ear as well as the brain. The four symphonies are all given intelligent and engaging performances. Considering how far this must be from standard repertoire, both Groves and Mackerras have prepared the RLPO to give performances that it would be hard to imagine being bettered. (Which is just as well as we are unlikely to get others in the current climate.) If you enjoy the symphonies of Carl Nielsen and Robert Simpson, Brian will not disappoint you with these interesting works.

Maybe can remind you a little Walton, maybe some Bliss or late Elgar in his orchestral forms, maybe his internal music development seems like Malcom Arnold, but this ever- relentless multiform worderfull music, always cause you the impresion of being heard for the fist time.
Freshness perse doesn`t worth a five star rank but put this music near to that. The interpretation, in spite of not having other one to compare, sounds to me very clear and commited and specially warth.
So this "zoom" to Brian`s music left you wanting for more of his 31 symphonies and that rises the bar of the achivement for this recording.
For the price and the quality I just say is a "must" of British music.
