5.0 out of 5 stars Great Leap Forward!, 29 Nov 2002
By juliephive (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
Ballboy make a huge leap forward in this, their second album. The sound is bigger, more lush and more varied than Club Anthems 2001. The song titles, as always, are a treasure. It is impossible not to love a song called 'i wonder if you're drunk enough to sleep with me tonight'. The album starts off pop, and then turns on a two song section in the middle (acoustic "i lost you, but i found country music" followed by the grand orchestral spoken word hypnosis of "a europe-wide search for love") into a heavier, darker affair. Any hopes of redemption from the penultimate song "sex is boring" (next lyric "with me") are dashed with an achingly beautiful, but desperately dark final song - "meet me at the shooting range" where acoustic guitar and sombre cellos tell a tale of despair. I don't know if all is well in singer Gordon McIntyre's world, but he and Ballboy have given us an album to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scotland loves Ballboy..., 28 Jan 2003
By paul w. (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Well I do anyway! Having been lucky enough to see Ballboy play live a few times I was hoping that the new album would live up to the live set and they have managed it in style. From the glorious put down of the first track through to the sad, dark cellos at the end, Ballboy give us more wit and invention than most bands do in their whole lifetime. Stand out tracks for me:

'I lost you, but I found country music' which manages to be funny, sad and beautiful whilst only being about a minute long.

'a europwide search for love' with its wall of strings.

'avant garde music' with the previously mentioned f*** you to a girl who works in a record shop.

'where do the nights of sleep go to when they do not come to me?' which reminds me of new order with its drum machines and synths.

but as i say they are only my personal favourites. Buy this album, and you can pick your own!
