Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Maps, directions, local attractions, handy phrases--AutoRoute 2003 has just about everything you need to drive from one side of Europe to the other.

AutoRoute 2003 has the information needed to make it easier to get where you want to go, with new maps for Sweden and Portugal plus street-level information for more countries. That means you can type in two addresses (AutoRoute 2003 can decipher post codes or suggest matches for places with hard-to-spell names to make it easier) and get driving directions with estimated times. You can also see useful places along the way from ATMs and petrol stations to pubs, tube stops and hotels. There are 400,000 "points of interest" across the 13 countries the maps cover and you can import your own address data (for the UK only) or stick (virtual) pins in the map to mark places. Add any of these to the journey and decide how long you want to spend there and AutoRoute 2003 adds them to the directions.

You can also customise the routes AutoRoute 2003 comes up with, either by specifying which kind of roads you prefer to drive on, or by telling it the roads you don't want to drive down. You can mark a whole area to avoid or drag the route onto a different road.

Unless you're taking a laptop in the car you'll want to print the maps and directions and AutoRoute 2003 gives you an excellent choice of map styles to print out, including turn-by-turn diagrams or strips of the map with directions printed alongside. You can also export maps to view on your Pocket PC (the software includes an updated version of the Pocket Streets program) or save them as Web pages.

AutoRoute 2003 doesn't have the same level of detail for all countries. England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands are particularly well covered though, and the route-finding tools are powerful, flexible and easy to use. If you're driving in Western Europe for business or pleasure, AutoRoute 2003 will help you stay on the right road. --Mary Branscombe

5.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Autoroute 2003, 7 April 2003
By Cahir Davitt (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
The 2003 version of Autoroute could be considered an upgrade or a down grade depending on your point of view. The mapping for most of Western Europe has improved, but now road mapping for most of Eastern Europe has now disappeared. While you might not need fully detailed mapping of say central Athens, you will now have to resort to traditional methods of using paper maps to work out your way there. This is a major disappointment in this release. The functionality of Autoroute 2001 has been removed to make way for more detailed maps of Western Europe and the ability to find addresses for more countries than the UK, France and Germany.

I bought this version because according to the Microsoft website, street level mapping for Dublin, Ireland was now included. What the website didn't say was that they had removed all the back road information for the rest of the country, thus removing a major chunk of functionality from the program. I now have 3 copies of Autoroute hogging my already cluttered computer disk. Version 98 is there to provide me with the images and tourist information that are actually useful, but more or less dropped in subsequent versions. The 2001 version is there to provide me with the back road information I need to get around Ireland, and the 2003 version is there to provide me with the street level information that I need for Dublin.

The Pocket Streets is quite frustrating as a result, as the latest version I need to read my street level map on my pocket PC doesn't read the back road maps that I need from the 2001 version. Therefore I now need 2 versions of Pocket streets on my Pocket PC. A map scale would have been useful, as having an idea of how far away somethinbg is is difficult to gauge on a Pocket Street Map. That being said, having a fully detailed city map on a Pocket PC is extremely useful, especially if you are visiting a few cities in one trip. Again users of this product beware, If I want to find an address in London, Paris Berlin, this is no problem, the software sorts it out. However, load up a map of Dublin, Ireland and the software cannot find any Dublin street addresses. Not exactly user freindly. Being a native of Dublin this is not a major problem to me but it could be to a visitor looking for that functionality.

Despite my comments above, I would still recommend Autoroute 2003, as the level of detail has improved over the previous release. Cities and towns I have visited over the years are mapped accurately. For example compare the Barcelona area with the previous release and there is no comparison in terms of information and detail.

If Microsoft can combine the best attributes of all the Autoroutes released to date, they should do so, in order to avoid a certain amount of user frustration. Perhaps this will require multiple CD's or a DVD release. But I would be willing to pay the price is all the minor annoying issues were tidied up.

To sum up, If you need this product to do certain tasks, for example, if you wish to work out a route from Athlone, Ireland to Athens Greece, then you should probably stick to Autoroute 2001. However if you require the increased level of mapping detail and have no need for information on Eastern Europe, then you should upgrade.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lost Countries, 8 May 2003
By Michael Jordan (Sterling, Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
While slightly improving some of the features, a significant amount of countries were dropped from the database as compared to the 2002 edition.

I like to think that upgrades improve functionality, not decrease it. I have since reverted to the 2002 edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well implemented as ever, but where's the data gone?, 15 Sep 2003
By A Customer
I have to agree with other reviewers - this product is so little help? From an Irish perspective, it's nice to have a detailed map of Dublin - even if, like me, you don't drink, it's nice to have pubs shown on the map because that's how most people give directions - but it's all no use if I can't use it to navigate around the countryside. Only major (N or M roads) are reliably covered, so the suggested routes are, sadly, nonsense! C'mon, Microsoft, Ireland did eventually ratify the Nice treaty, so could you please put the country back in Europe? (Even if it hadn't, "Europe" is still bigger than the EU...)
