4.0 out of 5 stars The best is yet to come, 10 Jul 2006
By Adam K. "adam k" (London, London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I had to write this to counter the arrant nonsense written elsewhere. Vienna is NOTHING like Kate Melua. Vienna, for a start, writes all her own songs and doesn't trade on her looks. Vienna is also an excellent musician, singer and songwriter. This was her first album and sets the pace for what was to come. IMHO her follow up was even better (a lot of fans disagree) and I, for one, am really looking forward to her next release in a couple of weeks.

I can only repeat what the other reviewer's friend said: If you like Tori Amos, you'll like this. I've heard a lot of Tori clones (Toriadores?) and most of them are but pale imitations. Vienna stands out on the strength of her writing and her down-to-earthness. check her out, without prejudice and certainly without tenuous comparisons.

3.0 out of 5 stars Katie Melua-esque., 9 Jan 2005
I got this recomendation from a friend who said "if you like Tori Amos, you'll like her."

She's nothing like Amos herself, or indeed Fiona Apple, but she is an artist that has yet to meet the standards of both.

Teng has a lovely voice that isn't direct, and her song-writing is pretty. There's nothing angry or confrontational about her, but all the same it's bland.

This is a U.S Katie Melua, and if you like that sort of this then go ahead.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want enjoyable, uplifting, beautiful, try this!, 7 Jun 2009

Whilst annoyingly difficult to obtain at a reasonable price outside the US, I would urge you to do so.

If you like Tori Amos, or if you like Tori Amos apart from the mad crazy bits she does, then Vienna Teng is definitely for you. The music and lyrics are performed with emotive passion and brilliantly executed, and it's hard to pick a best song from this album. There are certainly no duff ones, and The Tower, Drought, Unwritten Letter and Eric's Song are especially good. The best album so far I think!
