5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece, 2 April 2004
By Mr. S. R. Ronson "Steven Ronald Ronson" (Lincolnshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Talbot's 'Dying Swan' combines beautifully melodic lines with dissonance, blends clashing ideas with harmonious ones and, quite simply, works on several different levels. To listen to, from start to finish, Talbot takes us on a musical journey, courtesy of a piano based motif, developed into a 'cello motif, transforming into a most beautiful passage for saxophone quartet and featuring inventive, adventurous and originally strange and beautiful string playing. This has hardly been off my CD player since I received it for a birthday present in February. I can quite happily leave it playing whilst reading or talking and it does not intrude, oddly enough. To really appreciate this, though, turn off the lights and listen to the whole thing, all the way through. I shall be buying more of Talbot's music, without a doubt!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethereally beautiful, 5 Sep 2003
Imagine, if you will, a warm August evening. You are sitting in front of an open-air stage, in the middle of a park. High up in front of you, a castle upon a hilltop. Above that, only the endless blue sky. All around you, musical notes rise into the air with a curiously ethereal beauty, carrying you upwards into something quite heavenly.

A CD can never quite compete with the live experience I was fortunate enough to have at this year's Edinburgh Festival, however the music by no means suffers for that. This is still an astoundingly glorious CD of modern classical music (if such an oxymoron is not enough to frighten you!). Stunningly elegant in its simplicity.
