Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

On Arabesque actress turned singer Jane Birkin reworks another set of songs by her former lover and mentor Serge Gainsbourg. It follows on from 1996's Versions Jane. This time she's accompanied, live in Paris, by the Algerian and Romany arrangements of a North African band, and their quavering violin and tinny, clattering percussion form an appropriately exotic backdrop to Gainsbourg's examinations of passionate relationships and the sweet minutiae of love. Birkin, her entrance occasionally heralded by the complex and vibrant chanting of Moumen, is not technically the greatest of singers, but she works hard to extract meaning and emotion from the songs, thus lending depth to Gainsbourg's sometimes overwrought phrasings.

There's variety here, too. "Amours Des Feintes", with its rolling piano, recalls Jacques Brel, "Baby Alone in Babylone" is like a cute Kurt Weill, "Close to the River" is a poem written by Birkin's brother's son, dead in an accident at 20, and the closing "La Javanaise" is a moving a cappella. And to think that Gainsbourg originally recorded "Je T'Aime…Moi Non Plus" with Brigitte Bardot, only calling in Birkin when Bardot decided the track might upset her husband. Had Bardot been a tad more selfish, the tasteful and touching Arabesque would never have happened. --Dominic Wills

5.0 out of 5 stars C'est magnifique!, 19 Jul 2003
By chance happened to catch the televised concert of this CD and was blown away by how natural and exotic Jane Birkin's performance was. Didn't know much of Gainsboro's work except for 'Je t'aime' but this CD is a real eye-opener(sorry ear-opener!) Absolutely beautiful melodies with superb middle-eastern backing musicians who compliment Jane's fragile voice perfectly. Buy it if you love all things French or if you just simply love excellent music which exudes both sadness & 'joie de vivre'. Stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars For all Francophiles, 29 Jun 2003
I watched the concert 'Arabesque' on TV & was blown away by the mix of Jane Birkin's fragile, sensitive voice & the arabic rhythms of the backing musicians. I know little of Serge Gainsborough except the famous 'Je t'aime' & this selection have made me realise what a huge talent he was. I love the natural, unpretentious rendering of these songs. Who needs slick production when you can enjoy the raw talent on offer here? I urge anyone who loves France & its culture to buy this CD & if possible to get the DVD to watch Jane perform so touchingly. This CD is full of the pathos & 'joie de vivre'of a life fully lived.

4.0 out of 5 stars In memoire de Gainsburg, 16 May 2003
By A Customer
In France, the appeal of singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg was famously universal. In Britain, however, his music tragically remains an acquired taste.
Jane Birkin, his former wife, reinterprets his songs in a world-music style, somewhere between Algeria and Andalucia .

Listening to this CD, we can probably understand what Gainsbourg must have loved in Birkin's voice: her breathy vulnerability.

We can then fully appreciate "Elisa" in its cabaret jauntiness. "Valse de Melody" is transformed from a pretty dramatic song to a very intense piece with the addition of keening Arabic vocalist Moumen.

"Et Quand Bien Même" sees her struggling with melancholy; she falls silent as the rhythm picks up and transforms the ballad into a dance.

Jane Birkin shines with confidence and pride, enjoying the familiarity of Gainsbourg's songs and the freedom of the heady rhythms.

A "not to be missed" one.
