Everyone should make room for this delectable double album. Expensive? Well, not when you take into account all that is on offer. Previously unpublished music, for conventional and unconventional forces; music distantly redolent of Brahms, then with a soupcon of Ravel, but always English and always Vaughan Williams. Fans of RVW the miniaturist cannot fail to be charmed by the two Romances and the Suite de ballet. Stronger fare is on offer in the form of a string quartet, piano quintet and also one for clarinet/horn/piano/violin/cello. Most familiar is probably the Household Music, but here performed as music for string quartet.

This music strikes deep, beyond superficial responses to landscape and nature, there being a great emotion and generosity present (e.g. the Romance for viola and piano). Don't imagine that Vaughan Williams hid this music away because it is slipshod or derivative. Not every piece will get a smooth path to publication, not every music-going public is receptive at time of composition. How many English composers have been slighted due to fears about their being anachronistic or imitative of european greats: too many and often unwisely.

Start putting coins in a jar now. We owe Hyperion and the Nash Ensemble a debt of gratitude.
