5.0 out of 5 stars As significant Beethoven series reissued., 24 April 2003
By John Austin "austinjr@bigpond.net.au" (Kangaroo Ground, Australia) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Felix Weingartner's recordings of Beethoven symphonies are significant in several ways. He was the first conductor to be invited to record all nine of them. By reputation and on the evidence of the recordings, his versions of the symphonies have an essential "rightness" about them. The adjective "lean" is sometimes used to describe them, and to contrast them with the lashings of stodge and heavy applications of spice that other conductors have been known to apply to them.

Four years Toscanini's senior, and championed in his youth by Brahms and Liszt, Weingartner lived long enough to undertake the recording of Beethoven's symphonies mainly in the 1930s when he was in his mid-seventies.

Naxos begins its welcome reissue of them with a well-packed CD that includes the first two symphonies. The recordings were made in Vienna and London. The sweet-toned oboe of the Vienna Philharmonic can be heard in the First Symphony, and the even sweeter, slimmer sound of Leon Goossens' oboe can be heard in the "Fidelio" Overture. Producer Mark Obert-Thorn apologizes for the "rather reverberant characteristic of the original venue" for the recording of the Symphony No 1. It was recorded in Vienna where also, in an even more reverberant Viennese venue, the same forces recorded what is for me the greatest of all versions of the "Eroica".

Perhaps Naxox will consolidate the full series into a box later. Meanwhile you'll not regret adding this to your cart, and you must be sure to add Weingartner's "Eroica" too, as soon as it becomes available.
