Amazon.co.uk Review
J Live are Martin Brew and Martin Desai, a sprightly pair of music heads from Manchester. The duo have gained a reputation as party people, and
A Night on the Rocks is full-on, rosy-cheeked confirmation of their commitment to shiny, upbeat and happy sounds. Not that there's anything too polished or cheesy about the album--it's just that it flows with an easiness and smoothness that fellow Mancunians like Rae and Christian would undoubtedly be proud of. In fact, Veba, the vocalist who graced the grooves of Rae and Christian's excellent "Spellbound", is featured here amid a whirlwind of brown corduroy and funky brass on the track "Scarlet Menace".
There's a range of styles here, from the natty Hammond and hip-hop workout "Caught on the Hop" to the slow-mo disco groove of "Heavens Above" and the filmic expanse of "French Letter". Guy Garvey features on "Cariad"; this track, "Following the Moment" and "Petrified Blue" provide the album's more introspective moments. Meanwhile, the mild electro bubbles of "Tears Like a Wave" rise up and explode gently into our ears. This is a diverse and dangerously good document. --Paul Sullivan
CD Description
Following a number of singles for Manchester's Pleasure label, 'A Night On The Rocks' is the debut album by Martin Desai and Martin Brew, aka J-Walk. Their mix of downtempo dance, soul and electronica has seen them compared by critics to acts such as Lemon Jelly and Zero 7. The majority of the album was recorded at Desai's own Codebreaker Studios, and it includes guest vocals by Guy Garvey, Veba, Pete Simpson and Sarah Hill.
