5.0 out of 5 stars submersion, 26 Oct 2005
By R. Olliver "prentle" (uk) - See all my reviews

I have to agree with the previous reviewer and say that I am a Warp label fan, loving Aphex Plaid Autechre Squarepusher et, al. I saw this in a small music shop in Brighton> I saw Warp logo, pleasant packaging. Noticed also the cunning way the track listing is spot laminated on the cd cover. Got home ...stereo loud..... hit play..... I nearly had a heart attack... What was this. I had heard some experimental music before this but it catches you by the throat this one. I listened to it all and loved every second. At first I was scared by the noise but by the time it finished..... silence. Everything was so much quieter than I remember... Now I was actually scared of the silence, quite a lot. Next time I gave it a listen It was on a CD Walkman whilst walking around Brighton The clarity of sound was such that I could imagine it was actually being piped out of hidden speakers across the rooftops, which again ... scared me.... A great example of Masami Akita, I have since got the Frog Remixes album and several other experimental albums and love them all. One for specialist tastes. I wonder how many other electronica fans this one surprised.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very difficult..., 20 Jan 2003

I have tried to listen to this CD, more than once. So far, I would say once was enough. It's just noise. Well constructed noise perhaps, but still just noise. I kept hoping it might descend into some sort of order out of the chaos, but it never does. I'm not averse to noise (I am quite happy listening to "Making orange things" by Venetian Snares & Speedranch) but this one does my head in. I guess you have to bear in mind that it was recorded "live in the studio" - it sounds like a jam session, and that's probably what it was.

It says on the packaging that it's best listened to at top volume on headphones, I may try that, and it may be better that way, but I can't guarantee anything.

Nice cover though!

4.0 out of 5 stars IDM discovers Noise underground, 1 April 2005
By P. Turton "iannisx" (uk) - See all my reviews

Corrosive sheets of white noise descend into churning static, convulsive glitches skitter over the surface, whilst infernal assembly-line rhythms grind away in the background.... You pretty much know where you are with Merzbow. This is a nice mixture of Haswell's nimble editing skills and Masami Akita's, shall we say, full-bodied approach to Noise. As usual with recent Merzbow, you can just about make out some foundering Metal riffage half-submerged in the static (and the repetition gives it some structure).
I've found some of Merzbow's more recent laptop stuff a bit simplistic - relying all too readily on simple loops and drones (his earlier analogue stuff was actually far more fractured - ironic, considering that Digital is supposed to be the non-linear medium). But this is impressively dense and layered music - with Haswell providing the concrete-style editing over Merzbow's trademark filter-sweeps.
Weird to think this release found the light of day on nice, polite IDM label Warp. The Plaid fans must have had a heart attack.
