Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
David Gray's A New Day at Midnight is darker than its mega-hit predecessor, and deeper, and all the better for that. Emotionally fuelled by the death of Gray's father and the birth of his son, it possesses much the same tone as White Ladder, being simultaneously celebratory and troubled. The album, though, is slow starting. "Caroline", with its rattling percussion and quasi-Celtic pedal steel excursions is a bit messy, while "Long Distance Call", mixing an orchestra with electronic effects, is an interesting collage but not much of a song. Both give the impression that Gray's trying to appear more cutting-edge than he actually is. It's with "Freedom", when that big piano deepens and the pain enters his voice, that he really gets going. This leads to the excellent "Kangaroo" and "Last Boat to America", both yearning and teeming with striking lyrical images. Then it really takes off, with the Stones-y rock groove of "Real Love" and the gospel feel of "Knowhere", leading to the quite brilliant unrequited love song "Be Mine" and crushing closer "The Other Side". --Dominic Wills

CD Description
Sixth album from Manchester singer-songwriter David Gray and the follow up to his hugely successful multi-platinum album 'White Ladder' which was released in 2000. Continues alongthe same lines as his previous albums fusing ghostly, bittersweet piano-based ballads alongside playful acoustic led pop tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another run up the ladder, 20 Oct 2002
By Mr. D. J. Brindle (Merseyside, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
David Gray returns with a simply superb collection of surprisingly downbeat and eternally simple songs.

Influenced by the death of his father (how could it not be?), A New Day At Midnight sees Gray in a reflective but beautifully poetic mood. Despite the sparse clarity on offer here it never wanders into misery. You can't help but feel there are better times ahead no matter how stripped down and lyrically naked the tracks are here.

Stand out tracks for me include "Please Forgive Me Mk 2" - "Carloine", fourth track "Freedom" which is perhaps Gray's most personal to date, and "Last Boat To America" which is beautifully arranged lyrically - showing Gray has mastered the songwriters craft and the art of poetry.

Live favourite "Real Love" is a great inclusion although here it is sparse and slightly melancholic, as opposed to the live barnstormer we know. "Be Mine" is a certain UK Number 1 single - this albums "Babylon" if you like. Lyrically it deals with soon-to-be requited love in a way only David Gray can quite pull off without seeming twee. Album closer "The Other Side" is simply stunning and emotionally affecting. No bass - just piano, voice and basic percussion, it treads the ground of death, both of life and of a relationship. A song of many meanings to many people I am quite sure.

In short the album is not just "White Ladder Part 2" but a beautiful collection of positive but quite downbeat and sparsely arranged tracks that will, I am sure, surpass its blockbusting forefather commercuially and artistically.

Excellent and a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best one so far!, 29 Oct 2002
Probably I'm one of the very few people who were a bit disappointed by "White Ladder", David's 1998/2000 breakthrough-album. But to me it always sounded a bit sterile and bloodless, although it's still a great album. I always liked his earlier albums more, which are more acoustic and spontaneous. Here's the combination. The programmed, intimate elements of White Ladder, combined with the freshness of "Flesh" or "Sell, Sell, Sell". Already the first song "Dead in the Water" is full of an energy which is missing on White Ladder. Other Highlights are (for me) "Freedom", a beautiful slow song with brass introduction, "Real Love", a typical Gray song that could have been a missing "A Century Ends" track, "Be Mine" and the closing song "The Other Side", which starts as a piano ballad and then builds up. "A New Day At Midnight" has the best of each
side there is to David Gray. Really, really good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Feeling bad never felt so good!, 17 Feb 2003
By sensoria (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Ok, let's get this cleared up straight away, "A New Day At Midnight" is certainly no "White Ladder" part 2. The death of Gray's father haung over the recording of this album and ultimately contributed to it's much more downbeat and moving feel.

You also have to respect Gray for making the kind of album he wanted rather than recycle his previous outing - which no doubt the record company would have pushed him for.

However, the 12 tracks on offer here reafirm Gray as a highly talented singer-songwriter. Moody, introspective and sentimental the album is a winner from start to finish.

The only criticism is that there are no obvious big singles on the album (perhaps with the exceptions of "Dead In The Water" an "Be Mine"). These are the kind of personal songs that need to be experienced as one long album listen rather than 3 minute radio extracts sandwiched between the latest reality TV wannabe and r 'n' b soundalikes. Of course, that's a shame, as the album deserves to be brought to a wider audience...but their lost is our undoubted again. That said though, Gray's name alone should see "New Day..." doing decent business at the tills.

A moody masterpiece for adults!
