Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Learn to Speak is a language-learning CD-ROM tailored particularly at family learning. With a mixture of fun games, video guides to some of the country's attractions, and thorough language learning tools, this package is definitely a winning combination.

One of the really distinctive elements of the package is that it is very easy to tailor to the needs of each user, making it attractive to a wide range of people who want to learn. To begin with, then, the user is given a test to appraise their language level, they can then set up their own programme of study, targeting the areas which they need to concentrate on. So, for those learning in advance of a holiday, the focus can be on topics related to travel; for business people, there are also appropriate role plays. In each case, grammar boxes point up relevant issues thrown up by role plays--but whatever your path through the package, you end up learning the grammatical rules appropriate to your language level. As well as these grammatical tutorials, there is a helpful phrasebook which you can carry round with you when you are travelling, a thorough dictionary and the opportunity to compare your pronunciation with that of a native speaker.

This excellent structure means that you do not have to fight your way through unnecessary information; so if you are not going to be travelling through the country by train, you will no longer be forced to learn how to ask which platform the train leaves from. The user-friendliness is accentuated by some unusually interesting graphics; instead of the grainy images lifted from phrasebooks of the 1980s – often to be found in this type of package--there is a mixture of cartoons and high quality digital images. This confirms the end impression, which is definitely of a package which has left old language-learning rituals firmly in the 20th century. --Toby Green

2.0 out of 5 stars Learn Latin American Spanish, 16 Mar 2004
By A. Johnson (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this on the recommendation of a friend who has version 8 but I have very mixed feelings over it as it has many problems.

1) An initial problem is that it is misleading. It is marketed as "Learn Spanish" and the box bears the Spanish flag as well as the title "Discover Spain" when referring to the included cultural movies. Start using the CD-ROMs though and you find movies on Mexico, not Spain; the pronunciation is not Castilian Spanish and some of the words you learn are not even used in Spain.

2) As the other reviewer mentioned, you will run into problems if you install it anywhere other than the default location. A word of warning to Windows users on dual-boot systems: If you are running it from an OS on drive D: then you must install it to C:\Program Files, even though the default will suggest D:\Program Files!

3) The text contains numerous errors - most notable so far is the second (?) verb table you come across which is half incorrect - you get a horrible mix of Ser and Estar.

4) The software features speech recognition that is reasonably good although at times it will refuse to understand you and it only works by listening for the specific replies it is set to recognise - so you can say anything at all to it and it will try and decide which target phrase you said!

5) The box advertises "Additional Internet Lessons and Resources" which "may be discontinued at any time" but despite having bought this as soon as it came out I have seen no sign of them.

6) The "free" microphone offer that I took them up on came to nothing.

The content of the CD-ROMs lets you learn basic words and phrases although I found that there were a lot of times when you are learning a phrase by rote without understanding its derivation. Sections on vocabulary try and mitigate this to some extent. One area I found very useful was the sections on grammar - although the talking crow animations are horribly irritating.

It is perhaps a useful adjunct to other forms of learning but if you want something really helpful get the Michel Thomas CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb product offering real value for money!, 28 April 2004
By crounauer (Aberdeen, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Learn to Speak Spanish is an expansive language program that uses a wealthof instructional techniques to teach Spanish to the earnest user. Itincludes lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and conversation (both verbal andwritten), and provides plenty of practice, drill and review in each ofthese areas.
Unlike most language software programs, Learn to SpeakSpanish attempts to teach the language from the ground up. It not onlyimmerses the user in the language, but it provides extensive grammarlessons as well. The program is divided into 10 units and 30 chapters. Each chapter contains a vocabulary list, story, dialogue, grammar topic, conversation lab, and exercises. Also included are fun games to break themonotony while strengthening and reinforcing learning. Speech recognitiontechnology allows users to test their knowledge and perfect their accents with immediate feedback from the computer.
This excellent Spanish language program is recommended for those who want to learn the language thoroughly. It includes grammar fundamentals, vocabulary and conversational instruction together in an organized, easy-to-follow package.

The free microphone offer has unfortuately ended!

Good Luck!

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING, 31 Oct 2003
I just purchased the Learn to Speak Spanish V9.0, but the program has a serious flaw. It only works if you install it in the default directories. So my advice: Don't buy!
