Amazon.co.uk Review
Learn to Speak is a language-learning CD-ROM tailored particularly at family learning. With a mixture of fun games, video guides to some of the country's attractions, and thorough language learning tools, this package is definitely a winning combination.
One of the really distinctive elements of the package is that it is very easy to tailor to the needs of each user, making it attractive to a wide range of people who want to learn. To begin with, then, the user is given a test to appraise their language level, they can then set up their own programme of study, targeting the areas which they need to concentrate on. So, for those learning in advance of a holiday, the focus can be on topics related to travel; for business people, there are also appropriate role plays. In each case, grammar boxes point up relevant issues thrown up by role plays--but whatever your path through the package, you end up learning the grammatical rules appropriate to your language level. As well as these grammatical tutorials, there is a helpful phrasebook which you can carry round with you when you are travelling, a thorough dictionary and the opportunity to compare your pronunciation with that of a native speaker.
This excellent structure means that you do not have to fight your way through unnecessary information; so if you are not going to be travelling through the country by train, you will no longer be forced to learn how to ask which platform the train leaves from. The user-friendliness is accentuated by some unusually interesting graphics; instead of the grainy images lifted from phrasebooks of the 1980s often to be found in this type of package--there is a mixture of cartoons and high quality digital images. This confirms the end impression, which is definitely of a package which has left old language-learning rituals firmly in the 20th century. --Toby Green
