Product Description

CD Description

Once known as hard-core blues/R&B traditionalists, the Stones plunged deeper into the waters of original songwriting onBETWEEN THE BUTTONS, leading to a golden age of classic albums including LET IT BLEED, BEGGAR'S BANQUET and EXILE ON MAIN STREET. BUTTONS was also the last album produced by then-manager/svengali Andrew Loog Oldham. More importantly, the obscure songs on this tight package show the Stones coming into their own as composers.
Between the melodic balladry of "Back Street Girl" and Mick Jagger's Dylanesque inflections on "She Smiled Sweetly", BUTTONS found the Stones in a strata far beyond covering Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. Although none of these developments ranks with the Beatles' contemporaneous sonic experiments, the Fabs' bad-boy counterparts showed differing degrees of whimsy and sass, i.e. Ian Stewart's barrelhouse piano and Brian Jones' kazoo playing on "Cool, Calm & Collected" or the Dixieland-flavoured "Something Happened To Me Yesterday".

5.0 out of 5 stars very underrated classic stones mk 1, 1 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This is a very underrated album and it's about time it received due praise. At the time of its original release (Jan '67) it garnered good reviews in the music press (best stones album yet etc etc) but has sadly suffered in the years since, partly due (possibly) to the stones' intense dislike for the album (both jagger and richards called it 'crap').

Which is a shame because there really is a lot of great music present. The musicianship is more accomplished than the earlier albums (ie. the overrated Aftermath)and each band member excels.
Lots of weird and wonderful instruments played by Mr Jones; great and innovative guitar playing from Mr Richards (i.e.Miss Amanda Jones); Jagger is in fine voice and the drum sound is excellent throughout (i.e. Yesterday's Papers). 'Something happened to me yesterday' has Keith's first recorded solo vocal (shared with Mick). There's not a bad track on it.

The series of classic Stones albums begin here. Right through to It's Only Rock n Roll and Mick Taylor's departure.

Recommended!!

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting, if patchy, time-capsule, 17 Jun 2004
Possibly the most overlooked of the Stones' sixties output, the UK version of Between The Buttons contained no hit singles and hence it has become something of an enigma. On first listen it sounds similar to Aftermath, but even worse. Many of the tracks are instantly forgettable, while a couple of them - Yesterdays Papers, My Obsession - don't even sound musically legal!

On closer inspection however, some strong tracks start to emerge. In particular, we have the sublime, Dylan-esque Who's Been Sleeping Here? Then there's the hectic, rocking and rolling of Miss Amanda Jones, and the playful nod to the Kinks that is Cool, Calm, Collected. The two tracks exclusive to the UK version are Back Street Girl, a pleasing number typical of their early ballads, and Please Go Home, a shimmering descendant of the earlier Not Fade Away.

You can call this album patchy, even insignificant, and I'm not going to argue with you. However, it's still home to the odd gem, so please don't write it off - please don't do that!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Stones Own 'Scottish Play', 6 Sep 2003

Mick Jagger has said some harsh things about BTB most of it to do with Andrew Oldham's production and it is indeed a bit twee in parts but that said it does contain some very good songs in 'Yesterdays Papers', 'Connection', 'Back Street Girl', 'Complicated' and 'Miss Amanda Jones'.
The fuzzed out cod Bo-Diddley of 'Please Go Home' and awkward Dixie strut of 'Call Calm & Collected' with it's awful kazoo solo lose it stars but it's still worth having in your collection for the above mentioned tracks.

Worth noting is that this was the last Stones release to have different tracks on both the UK & US versions
