5.0 out of 5 stars Chewin' The Fat team pull off another top comedy, 29 Dec 2002
By "dangee_hotshot" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Along with the success (mostly in Scotland) of the Chewin' The Fat TV series, a spin-off was produced called 'Still Game', about two elderly characters called Jack and Victor, played by comedians Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan.

This is a top show, and doesn't have the quantity of laughs that Chewin' The Fat had, basically down to this being a straight sitcom type comedy show, and isn't a sketch show like Chewin' the Fat.
The fact that this isn't a sketch show, lets it have a story structure, and has more depth into the characters.
With room for this, the story shows sometimes away from the comedy about how harsh life is for pensioners that live in Scotland, with the loneliness of the family not visiting, and not having enough money to pay for a reasonable standard of heating.
But at the same time it can poke fun at sad situations, and make light of them.
For example, the old men at the local pub put on a 'Hypothermia Sweepstakes' in a bid to make some money of a bad situation.

Overall, terrific comedy with the maturity that Chewin' The Fat lacked, and personally this is my favourite British comedy show on TV at the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars you cannot miss this, 21 Oct 2004

I do not know one person who does not like Still game. The first series, took my by surprise, as I was not a huge fan of Chewin the Fat. This is so much better than its predecessor, in every aspect. I have actually come to feel a great deal of warmth for jack & Victor, and can only hope that I am close to them when I get to that Age. This series will have your eyes watering, your sides splitting, and talking about the one-liners for weeks to come. And I can assure you that you'll be back on ordering series 2 & 3 very quickly

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh yes., 18 May 2006

Just happened to spot this when it was first aired on the TV - pure brilliance. All the characters are superbly portrayed (Navid the newsagent - a masterstroke of writing and casting). The English networks have been very slow to spot the quality of observational comedy in this gem (along with the series "Chewin' the Fat").
