Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you have a little Michael--or Michaela--Shumacher waiting in the pits, then the Battery Operated Formula 1 Grand Prix Car, from Berchet, is truly the ultimate gift.

Measuring 1.5m (just over 5 feet) in length, and weighing in at 42 kg (just under 20 lbs) this is no toy-track lightweight! The car arrives boxed, and the only assembly required is to fit the nose cone, steering wheel, tail and back spoilers, all of which screw on easily and safely (full instructions are included). Once the battery is in place (NB: The battery requires 24 hours charging time before use) you can strap your youngster in, and they're ready for the off.

The accelorator pedal is responsive but controlled, and even at full tilt (though your children will find it very exciting) you can rest assured that it isn't so fast as to prove dangerous. Even the youngest of testers who drove this car (rising 3-year-olds) soon got the hang of the gears and brake, though physically reaching the pedals did prove a bit of stretch; the optimum age for this model is therefore around 4-5 years.

The only downside of this car and the others in the same range is the time required to charge the battery--24 hours for each use. In this test, the car still had power after 90 minutes of more or less continuous use, though the manufacturer recommends it's usually around 1 hour. That said, children will need constant supervision whilst driving, and an hour or two before raising the chequered flag is probably enough to keep it a special treat.

The F1 Grand Prix car was tested on carpet in a room with other similar cars, and sustained the odd knock and bump; however, the superlative quality of the plastic and trimmings meant it was completely unnoticeable and finished the test drive without one stop in the pits, looking good as new. Traction was good, with only the odd enthusiastic start causing a wheel spin, and the young drivers really were enthralled--even chocolate biscuits served only as a temporary diversion from the race.

As an ultimate gift for a four or five-year-old who's into cars you need not look any further. The car is of the highest quality and is stylish, but durable, and exciting, but safe. The size and scope of the car means it will probably last at least two to three years in terms of play value and quality. --Lucie Naylor
