Amazon.co.uk Review

Every now and then, a band releases a best-of album that makes the previously unimpressed see what they've been missing all along. On Like the Deserts Miss the Rain Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl have created a personal blend of big hits, obscure b-sides, album tracks and remixes that amounts to the best record of their 20-year career.

We may know that they began as lefty student bossa nova interpreters, grabbed unlikely success as Sade-for-bedsits with 1984's "Each and Every One" single and 1988's Idlewild album, and went successfully house and drum & bass with "Missing" and Walking Wounded in the mid-1990s.

What we perhaps missed is how subtly and powerfully they've developed their style, how even the most MOR moments have contained some kind of edge--a vocal yearning here, a rhythmic muscularity there. Thorn's lyrics are a particular revelation--defiant, angry, funny and true--and her moving expression of sisterly love on "Protection" sounds more at home here than on the Massive Attack album of the same name. In short, this is a deep and entertaining pop record that shows exactly why they've survived and thrived for so long. --Garry Mulholland

CD Description

'Like The Deserts Miss The Rain' is a personal retrospective featuring sixteen tracks which cover twenty years of Everything But The Girl. The tracks range from EBTG's jazz influenced 1984 debut single 'Each And Every One' through to rare B-sides, album tracks, exclusive remixes and their 1995 smash hit single 'Missing'.

5.0 out of 5 stars subtle subversion, 25 Oct 2002
By mick ryan (london) - See all my reviews
a personal retrospective from ben and tracey themselves. a perfect distillation of the dance bits and the non-dance bits. a very evocative subtle work. ebtg are deeply underrated lyricists and this cd contains some of their finest words - a piece of my mind, protection, rollercoaster. this is an effortless compilation of real substance from often one of the most overlooked british bands of the past 20 years. quietly ahead of their time at almost every stage. brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Distant shores, 3 Feb 2004
The cliche about EBTG is that their early and later work (or pre-and post-Massive Attack if you like) don't sit well together and could be by different bands. Untrue of course, and a listen through Like The Deserts Miss The Rains proves this. Why did the Massive choose to work with Thorn, singer in a fairly obscure band best known for student gigs and the odd well chosen cover? Because the only record they could all agree on liking was A Distant Shore, her bare, acoustic solo album of 1982 that presaged much of EBTG's early stuff and remains an indie classic. The thread running through their work is of small, unspoken, unflashy feelings, sentiments and experiences laced into musical textures and lyrical ticks. Still don't believe me? Play Almost Blue immediately followed by No Difference - tracks from opposite sides of the supposed divide. Spot the difference? Thought not.

4.0 out of 5 stars You couldn't handle the truth, 26 Oct 2002
I always think EBTG fans fall into two camps, they might not like it but they do. Trust me it took me a while to accept that I like it best when there's no remix or drum n bass. There that wasn't too difficult was it. There's no shame in it, I'm still allowed to like the Todd Terry remix of Missing.
This album is a mish mash of styles, most of it you have, most of it you need, but I would suggest that you need it split into two albums depending or your mood. Each and Everyone and Almost Blue, just don't fit that well with Protection and Walking Wounded. All that said if you're a fan you'll buy this and listen without complaint because you cannot bring yourself to admit the truth.

The perfect blend of the band's early bed-sit melancholia (now, where is that old grey mac?) and more adventurous bass and drum twiddling from more recent years.
