Product Description

fRoots, December 2002

Suuf is the new project from multi-instrumentalist and former Real World employee Simon Sleath. It features musicians he met up with whilst living in Senegal (including members of Super Diamano and Les Frères Guissé), plus like-minded Brits such as Afro-blues guitar hero Justin Adams. The result is a very well-crafted disc, blending acoustic and electric West African styles with touches of jazz, reggae and even some classical piano.

There is a warm understated quality at work, so that none of the musical combinations at play sound forced. There's some fine impassioned singing here too and with three vocalists involved, a good deal of variety. Particularly impressive are "Xarit", with its mix of Senegalese instrumentation and the classical piano of the aptly-named "Sarah Class", and the sparse, dubby, "Alla Yo". It's good to hear such enjoyable roots music amongst the first batch of releases on the Beeb's new Late Junction label. --Jamie Renton

5.0 out of 5 stars Debbo Hande, 6 April 2003
By A Customer
A beautiful fusion of east and west cultures. Very strong on the senegalese sounds which mingle wonderfully with the more western jazzy undertones. Rewards several listenings as the subtitles of the instruments reveal themselves.
