LoveLaughterandTruth is a compilation of performances given by Bill Hicks between 1990 and 1993 in Denver, San Ramon, Palm Beach, San Francisco and Pittsburgh. Like Bob Dylan, whose electrifying effect on 1960s folk was similar to that of Hicks on 1980s and 90s comedy, Hicks was a compulsive tourer, prepared to pitch up and play pretty much anywhere that had a roof. Inevitably, this is not a consistent artefact there are considerable variations in sound quality (from perfect to dreadful), audience response (from hysterical to perplexed), and Hicks's mood (from merely pugnacious to borderline violent).

What does not alter is the standard of Hicks' material, or the passion with which it is delivered--as a writer, Hicks was simply without peer, and as a performer always had more in common with devil-driven old-school rock & roll outlaws than he did with other stand-up comedians. When he really takes flight here, as on his superb tirade against children on aeroplanes, or a magnificent explanation of his loathing for dance clubs, or his rightly famous muse on what the world would be like if men were physically able to perform oral sex on themselves ("This theatre would be full of single women... watching an empty stage"), he's nothing less than Jerry Lee Lewis with punch lines. --Andrew Mueller
