Amazon.co.uk Review
With refreshing energy, Blue Crush is the kind of movie that girls and young women deserve to see more of. It's mostly for them (although nice tans and bikinis will attract the guys), and it rejuvenates the surf-movie tradition by showing real girls with real friendships, coping with absent parents, borderline poverty, rocky romance, and the challenge of raising a kid sister. For young Hawaiian Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth), those responsibilities are motivations to excel as a champion-class surfer--if she can overcome the fear of drowning, which she nearly did in a previous wipeout. Supportive friends (Girlfight's Michelle Rodriguez, and Sanoe Lake) help her reach the climactic competition on Oahu's infamous Bonzai Pipeline, and like Saturday Night Fever, this engaging film uplifts the working class without condescension, riding high toward the joy of achievement. As an amateur surfer, director John Stockwell (Crazy/Beautiful) captures the extreme thrill of the sport while respecting the forces of nature and human behaviour. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!, 23 Jan 2006
It's great to finally see a film where surfing isn't potrayed as the perfect lifestyle and an easy sport. What's great about this film is that it shows that not everything is perfect in the world. Although Annmarie's life might seem great from the outside, I bet that bringing up a rebellious sister and struggling with near poverty is no cup of tea. The photography in this movie is amazing, the way that it switches from over the water to under the water. The background of Hawaii is beautiful, and the Director has managed to capture the dangerous reality of surfing despite all of these factors. A must-see movie: captures the harsh reality of life with a feel-good ending!

3.0 out of 5 stars Frothy, 4 Sep 2003
By J. Cronin "dudara" (Ireland) - See all my reviews

Anne Marie is an ex-champion surfer having dropped out of competition after a near-drowning incident. In fact, three years later she's still dealing with it. Her mother is in Vegas leaving her to raise her somewhat rebellious sister, work as a chambermaid in a swanky tourist hotel, and surf. To make some money, she agrees to give lessons to an NFL jock staying in the hotel.

Now this is a chick flick, with a talented girl overcoming her fears, finding true love and making good. The problem is that by the time the end of the film comes, I was so sick of Ann-Marie failing or choking, that when she did succeed I didn't care. Her friends were constantly supportive, telling her that she had the talent and the ability. But yet she kept choking, time and time again, not only on the surfboard, but with her friends and love interest. At times the dialogue seemed so disjointed that it was as if the actors were only saying every second line from the script.

What is great about this film are the surfing scenes. The shots of waves and surfers riding pipes are stunning and the way the camera moves through the water from underneath to over is just fantastic. For the men, there's plenty of shots of young blonde women in bikins to justify watching this movie.

Some chick flicks are good, I just don't think this is one of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go big or go home...., 20 Mar 2003
By M. S. Fawcett "mfcufc" (London) - See all my reviews

See this film for the surfing shots alone! Brilliant filming above and below the water makes this film stand out from others in the surfing genre. Hawaii's North Shore is the real star of this movie and there is no better advert for paradise (although this film lifts itself above run-of-the-mill by pointing out that Hawaii also has a darker side). The five star US tourist lifestyle is neatly contrasted with the poverty and xenophobia of the islanders. It is a cute story with cute actors and cute scenery but set against a harder edged background. No mean feat to pull this off. The final surfing scenes actually had me sitting on the edge of my seat - I can't remember the last time a film had that effect on me. Buy it and enjoy....
