Lethal Legacy, 18 Dec 2002
Mel Gibson's DVD legacy certainly describes this awesome box set. It contains the first two of his famous lethal weapon series detailing the beginning of a partnership with the comical Danny Glover. In these films he is effectively a man close to insanity with little to live for which shows in his police work, at one point daring a criminal to "shoot me, go on just shoot me". Glover becomes a closer friend as they deal with various criminal gangs. In conspiracy theory he plays a man deemed to be crazy who believes that there are various government cover-ups going on. When he gets one right he involves Julia Roberts and of course romance then blossoms in this thriller. Maverick is a fantastic comedy starring Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner detailing the life of a card sharp as he goes for the poker jackpot. It has numerous twists and turns and is well worth seeing. Moving on to Mad Max we see his early work which is probably his best, as he plays a man who has lost a wife and child to a bike gang in futuristic Australia and then seeks revenge to a dark conclusion. Payback is another example of the gritty determined Gibson as seen in Lethal Weapon. In this film he is a thief who has stolen $70,000 which is then taken by his girlfriend and another accomplice. Effectively he goes all the way to the top of a criminal gang to get his cash back with very violent results. A very entertaining if violent movie. What Women Want is the perfect foil for the other movies and depicts a man who can hear women's thoughts. This helps him in his love life and to steal a promotion but of course develops his feminine side and desire to listen and help those around him. What lets this box set down in my eyes is Tequila Sunrise, a film that really goes nowhere. In it Gibson and Kurt Russell play a drug dealer and cop respectively who are friends. Gibson is warned off one last trade, but Michelle Pfeiffer gets between the two as women are want to! It would have been better in my opinion to have Ransom or another Lethal Weopan film instead of this. Other than that it is a box set every Gibson fan should own because it has eight of his films on DVD at only 48 quid if you buy off Amazon! Its a lethal steal.
