Amazon.co.uk Review

Conceivably, laddish London-based pop pin-ups Busted (or Charlie, James and Mattie as our daughters-with-attitude would have it) are what evil, plan-hatching marketing men ought to have in mind if they decided the music world needed to be taken over by a milk-toothed, mind-yer-"p"s-and-"q"s version of Blink 182. However, worrisome mums (or should that be "moms"--after all, car boots are "trunks", arses are "asses" and boyfriends get "dissed" not chucked in Busted's transatlantic teen-world) will find the lack of lyrical references to farting and fornication somewhat moralistically reassuring, although the peeping Tom confessions of hit single "What I Go to School For" and sexual fantasies about Britney ("I'll make you feel good inside") suggest that Busted's under-the-mattress porno stashes have yet to be dispensed with. Looking beyond the half-baked bad-boy image and linguistic schizophrenia, what you have here is three young guys with talent, tunes (they write their own, y'know), a decidedly English cheekiness, angry (well, perhaps slightly more cross than usual) guitars and--when they get it right--a hilariously understated way of conveying the calamity of a teenage social life ("I asked you to dance at the disco ... but you said no"). If only they could ditch the soppy ballad stuff and be done with it. --Kevin Maidment

CD Description

This is the debut album release from UK three piece Busted. The album features a mix of catchy pop songs with added guitars and witty lyrics. 'Busted' was written by the band themselves and has been likened to a cross between Blink 182 and'N-Sync. The single 'What I Go To School For' is also featured.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!, 9 Jul 2004
I am not the target audience for this type of music/band - but I love it! It's fun, lively and musically and lyrically better than their years would suggest!
So what if you have never heard of Green Day (see earlier review) - I suspect that it wouldn't matter anyway - this is a top CD (as is the other one by Busted) and it is well worth a listen to.
By the way - I'm 41 years old and still love new, fresh stuff like this. Keep it up boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wickid!!!, 3 April 2003
The first time I listened to this album, on the basis of Busted's fantastically catchy hit singles 'What I Go To School For' and 'Year 3000', I thought it was REALLY poor. Then, suddenly, one night I woke up and loved it!

Put simply, Busted do pop with a bit of bite better than anyone around. Their lyrics, whilst not winning them any Ivor Novello awards, are often really funny and occasionally, really outstanding ('Eveything I Knew' with the 'we used to talk about - whatever' practically sums up every relationship I've ever had!). And let's face it, for a group of teenagers, they've got huge talent - song-writers, good singing voices and playing their own instruments extremely well.

But, onto the songs. 'What I Go To School For', 'Year 3000', 'Crash & Burn' (released as 'You Said No') are Busted at their pop/rock best, all with irritatingly catchy choruses and some fantastic tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Also falling into this group are 'Dawson's Geek', 'All The Way' and 'Britney'. But, it's the ballads that come as the real surprise - they're unexpectedly good! My personal favourites are 'Losing You' which may be 'pure cheese' but gets me everytime, 'When Day Turns Into Night' which has very bare but beautiful instrumentals and 'Without You' - definitely Charlie's song, with him having sole songwriting credits and singing most of it, the 'rock power ballad' thing really suiting his gravelly voice and check out that gorgeous piano intro.

I can't not mention 'Everything I Knew', another personal favourite of mine, which is an up-tempo ballad with a great hook. Personally, I can't stand 'Psycho Girl' and the instrumental thing is a bit of a waste of space. Overall, however, this is a VERY catchy and extremely promising debut album that is definitely worth checking out and gets better with every listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Busted: The best album I own, 2 Feb 2003
By Kirsty Bagnall (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
My first impressions of Busted were simple: This band is gonna go far. Three homegrown teens from good old Blighty, Matt, James and Charlie are taking the charts by storm. Both of their first two singles went straight in to the top three and this album has recently gone gold.
The album itself is a good mixture of many levels of pop, from the more rocky side like the number three single 'What I Go To School For' to Ballads such as 'Losing You' and 'When The Day Turns Into Night'. Busted have never disputed the fact that they are a pop band, yet this album still has a cool rocky feel to it.
Songs on the album include Year 3000 which reached an impressive number 2 in the English charts on January 19th. The lads' idea of what the world will be like in a thousand years time, based on the hit film, 'Back to the future', a firm favourite with the boys from Busted. There are two songs on the album dedicated to Miss McKenzie, based on a past crush Matt had on his science teacher, the first song being 'What I Go To School For' and the final song on the album, 'Loser Kid'. There is even a song on the album dedicated to the lovely Ms. Spears, titled Britney.
As with every album there is some filler, songs such as 'Everything I Knew' and 'Without You' fit into this category, but with filler of this quality, the boys have nothing to worry about, I have heard songs in the charts no where near the quality of the worst tracks on this album.
My favourite tracks on this album are 'Crash and burn' about Charlie's past encounters with a girl at a disco and 'Psycho Girl', penned by James about a girl he knows, "She knows the song is about her".
The best thing, I believe about Busted, is that not only do they write their own songs, but they also play their own instruments, which is a rarity these days. And if 'Year 3000' is anything to go by, we will be hearing from Busted for a very long time yet.
