Bad Influence (1990) is a noir thriller starring Rob Lowe and James Spader.

Michael Boll (James Spader) is an anxious and insecure yuppie with a beautiful fiancé who comes from a wealthy and prominent family. He appears to have everything, except the big promotion at work, for which he is fighting with Patterson (Tony Maggio). One day he is in a bar, awkwardly trying to help a pretty young female when her jealous boyfriend enters and threatens to beat him up, mainly because the usually intimidated Michael verbally stands up for himself for the first time in his life. Immediately sensing that Michael is not going to take the argument to a physical level, though, the boyfriend does. This is when a handsome stranger (Rob Lowe) appears and stops the bully in his tracks. He then disappears. Later that evening, Michael runs into the stranger again and he introduces himself as Alex, who turns out to be a drifter. From this point on, the confident Alex purposely manipulates Michael under false pretences. In some ways he helps Michael become more assertive, to deal with his insecurities about his marriage to Ruth Fielding (Marcia Cross), his inability to stand up to the deceitful Patterson, and introduces him to the mysterious and seductive Claire (Lisa Zane). But Alex's methods quickly turn out to be those of a someone who is reckless and unbalanced. When Michael attempts to end the friendship, Alex takes it upon himself to change Michael's mind, and this is when it becomes clear that Alex is a dangerous sociopath.

I love this film of the nerdy office worker getting influenced by an outsider and stuffing his life up in the process.
It's well shot, well edited, fast-paced, but the soundtrack sounds very dated nowadays, which is why it only gets a 4/5. Get it if you want to see Rob Lowe doing some seriously good acting at a time when he was dismissed by the press as nothing more than just a pretty face. Good, scary fun.

Bad Influence is directed by Curtis Hanson and written by David Koepp. It stars Rob Lowe, James Spader, Lisa Zane and Christian Clemenson. Music is by Trevor Jones and cinematography by Robert Elswit.

Michael Boll (Spader) is the ultimate milquetoast. Alex (Lowe) is something altogether different. When Alex introduces himself into Michael's life, Michael finds from within a boldness he didn't know existed. But Alex's life lessons may just come at a cost.....

Tell me what you want more than anything else in the world.

The 90s began in a neo-norish haze for one time brat-packers Spader and Lowe. For Spader it was another chance to show, after 1989's Sex, Lies and Videotape, that he could do drama very well. For Lowe it was a case of dusting off his off screen misdemeanours to self mockingly portray the bad boy playing the bad boy. With future L.A. Confidential helmer Hanson in the chair overseeing things, Bad Influence rounded out as a sneaky bit of grit. It didn't make any great waves back on release, but it's a film that holds up surprisingly well these days, particularly as an 80s noir snapshot.

Thematically picture asks us if everyone has the devil inside them if prompted or manipulated from outside sources? Alex's motives are intentionally left sketchy, we are in no doubt from the opening credits that he's untrustworthy, yet who he is or what he's really about are questions left hanging in the air. A good looking charmer without doubt, and thanks to Spader's uber wimp beginnings, we find ourselves urging Alex on as he slots a spine into Michael's back.

Check out friends around you, you may end up with a psycho like Alex (played by Rob Lowe). What he does in the movie is quite impressive and psychotic, especially a dirty trick like breaking a tail light and pulling the broken bulb into a fuel tank. If you hit the brake pedal, OOPS! In general, I like the story, I like the casting. Very good performance from both James Spader (as Michael) and Rob Lowe (as Alex). Does Alex do it on purpose to screw up Michael's life? I don't think so. Alex gives Michael what he wants (gals, job promotion), Alex eliminates what Michael's afraid of (getting married). But Michael pisses Alex off and wants him out of his life. Of course Alex rampages, revenges, and takes back everything he gave to Michael. I don't find the movie is too exaggerated; in contrast, I'm convinced that it could happen to anyone of us anytime anywhere. Who knows?
About the DVD, it's a double-sided disc. One side is the 16:9 widescreen format, and the other side is the standard 4:3 format. Quite obvious, it is lacking of extra features. It only comes with subtitles and theatrical trailer. Overall, movie is good but features are short.
