Amazon.co.uk Review
Shaman starts with a problem--how do you follow the massive comeback, "make you a star again" success of his previous album Supernatural? Wyclef's no longer producing to bump things up and Santana's getting no younger. So what does he do? Pull in as many guest artists as possible. He has to; he's not a vocalist, and there's only so many guitar solos anyone can take. Shaman features, wait for it, Dido, Chad Kroeger from Nickelback, P.O.D., Macy Gray, Citizen Cope, Placido Domingo, Alejandro Lerner, Musiq, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Ozomatli, Seal, Michael Shrieve, and producers KC Porter and Kike Santander. Were the Neptunes busy? They're the only people missing.

Despite all these "stars", the instrumental "Victory Is One" is a standout track, blazing together Santana's age-old fusion of latin rock. Lead single "The Game of Love" sung by 19-year-old Michelle Branch is sugary 60s pop and shows a lack of consistency throughout the album. In truth it sounds like a record produced by a focus group. Each track targets a demographic with Santana playing the role of brand not band. Only Ozomatli and Macy Gray get Santana, themselves products of an alternative music upbringing. The rest of the artists such as Seal, Dido and Musiq (nee Musiq Soulchild) seem to have turned up for the pay-day. Santana doesn't play with any less conviction but many of his guests are here for the beer. That said his cover of Angelique Kidjo's "Adouma" is storming and on so called "world-music" territory ("Foo Foo", "Aye, Aye") Santana stands strong. However, you can only blame Santana and the focus group all stars for a ready meal album. If he'd concentrated a little more on who he is, not who he believes people would like him to be, this could have been a great album. --Jake Barnes

CD Description
Umpteenth album for Mexican blues-rock guitar virtuoso, following the phenomenal success of 1999's 'Supernatural'. In much the same fashion, 'Shaman' features a raft of guest stars from the worlds of rock and soul lending their vocal talents to Santana's smooth, tasteful adult-orientated rock including Michelle Branch, Seal, Macy Gray, Dido, Ozomatli, Christian rap-metallers POD and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger.

4.0 out of 5 stars You know what you think already ..., 29 Oct 2002
And the criticism will be fairly predictable, too .. too much like Supernatural ... repeating a formula ... using younger artists to increase his demographic share ... too much variety shows lack of artistic focus ... blah blah ...
None of this really matters when you play the album. And I don't believe that creating something "to formula" is as easy as it sounds, anyway. This is a long, generous, beautifully constructed album, with no filler. Even the Placido Domingo song is pretty remarkable, once you're over the shock of hearing his voice riding a wave of Latin percussion. Let's face it, you're going to hear this music if you buy the album or not; there are hits all over it. I'm an old Santana fan, and I love the way he reinvents his music. I don't have any problems with the commerciality of this music (was anyone whining about the Beatles' commerciality at the time? What kind of criticism is that anyway? Because it's popular, it's bad?), but I do have real doubts about the wisdom of the merchandise marketing push in the booklet. For someone who likes to express his spirituality, this is pretty crass. That aside, this is a beautiful, gleaming, fascinating, entertaining and moving album, and time will show it the equal of Supernatural (put both discs on "shuffle" for a treat!). And if you haven't already, check out Amigos, a lost gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Carlos' Stunning Guitarwork Saves the Day, 25 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This CD is a classic example of the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality i.e. if you finally got an armload of grammy awards from a certain formula, don't mess with it. Yes, the formula of bringing in 'current' artists certainly works. Each track is fresh and musically diverse - it contains just about every style/genre (except country - thank goodness) such as Latin, rock, pop, r&b, blues, dance, urban, etc. The pop track 'the game of love' feels a bit overproduced and too strategically aimed at being a hit single. Having said that, Carlos' brilliant guitarwork can even make that sound pleasurable. In fact, no matter how contrived any of the songs feel, Carlos always 'saves the day' with his stunning licks/solos. His guitarwork is truly masterful and is the glue that hold this CD together. The percussion section is excellent as well. Carlos just keeps getting better with age. If you can't get enough of Carlos' guitar playing, then buy this CD. You'll find yourself quickly addicted to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars shaman..........true head of the tribe, 8 April 2003
well., i have loosely followed Carlos from 1971, and sampled him at different points in time.
l believe Carlos to be a true head warrior, in being able to embrace any artist, sound, studio, producer, writer and challenge.
The real Santana on this album exposes itself through the fantastic opening track and track number seven.
All other cuts are clearly flirting with fashion and a great appeal to younger listeners, but sadly have absolutely nothing to do with the real Carlos Santana, except that he is showing us, that HE can influence ANY song.
Track 16 with Placido Domingo, first hearing l thought that this simply didn;t work, but i am glad to say, i am wrong. lt is, i do really think an absolute haunting classic and very beautiful,a moving picture in music.
lf anything, Carlos has moved on, just like all his albums, they find a way to move on. And of course, Carlos's guitar playing is truely breathtaking, moving on all the time.
