Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Based on the cult 1969 caper flick of the same name, The Italian Job follows the fortunes of an ambitious gang of thieves led by Michael Caine's near-legendary Charlie Croker. These loveable rogues are on a mission to snatch millions of pounds worth of gold bullion, using little more than some explosives, Benny Hill, and three patriotically coloured Minis.

The various stages of Driver-inspired racing action loosely follow the plot of the film as Croker brings together his dream team of dodgy geezers and sets the stage for the most audacious crime of the century. Swinging London Town is the setting for The Italian Job's first chapter, and here you'll get used to driving some of the game's different vehicles. These include swish 60s sports cars, limos, vans and, of course, those famous Minis. Most missions involve getting to a certain location before the time runs out, with the added complication of having to ditch any coppers that have given chase. As the story progresses you'll visit Turin and ultimately the Alps as Croker's gang attempt to make their getaway via a bullion-stuffed coach.

The Italian Job captures the spirit of the film well, with a voiceover from none other than celebrity Michael Caine-impersonator Phil Cornwell. The graphics, while lacking the polish and sophistication of Driver, are authentic enough, and the jolly soundtrack complements the action rather nicely. However, while dedicated fans of the film will love the obvious care and attention that has gone into this adaptation, other gamers may be a little disappointed by the shallow gameplay and lack of levels. While the sub-games that involve racing to checkpoints or running over traffic cones provide some extra value for money, ultimately there's little here that hasn't already been featured in other PSone driving games. --Tim Cant

Product Description
In 1969 the film The Italian Job was released in the UK and almost immediately achieved cult status. This game, like the film, revolves around Charlie Croker, who's out of jail and on the make again; he's attempting to steal $4m worth of gold in broad daylight and from under the noses of the Turin Polisei and the Mafia. There are a total of six playing modes, with the players thrashing the three Austin Mini Coopers and 11 other vehicles around massive, free form areas: London, Turin, and the Alps. Road, off-road and rooftop driving all feature in the game that delivers the ultimate mix of high-speed pursuit and thrilling chases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as Bad as the reviews say, 27 Oct 2001
I really liked this game. It makes a change from listening to thumping monotone music and driving a sports car around a track half a dozen times.

True, it's not the best game in the world, but it's does what it sets out to do, it's fun!

While I appreciate that the hardened gamers would find this 'too easy' perhaps, there are some, like myself, who like to have a bit of a laugh and the 'Michael Caine' voiceovers, not to mention the wonderful re-enacted scene's from the film all add to a game that's not to be taken too seriously.

You drive just about every vehicle that featured in the film, including the coach, and have to complete various tasks before 'doing the job'. Watch out for the police or mafia though.

Throughout the game you listen to the theme music from the film itself, which because I'm a fan anyway, I must admit didn't grate on my nerves unlike some other driving games music which I usually turn off after a couple of minutes!

I have a friend who has no interest in the normal driving games, preferring footy, and yet sat down and actually played this for hours.

Great fun.
