4.0 out of 5 stars Great musician....lacklustre DVD!, 16 Dec 2002
To celebrate the career of one of classical music's great conductors, Arthaus Musik has hardly pushed the boat out, though maestro Abbado is such a fascinating character that the subject makes this disc watchable. The documentary focuses on Abbado's period at the helm of the Berlin Philhrmonic, (this documentary was filmed in 1996) and the two Orchestras that he founded, namely the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Much is made of Abbado's musical integrity and collaborative genius and deservedly so, so you'll find no Toscanini-style tantrums or "Screaming-Skull" Solti-isms here! Abbado is a musician who puts the composer first and this is clearly evident if you have any of his CD's in your collection.I wish that Arthaus Musik had made more of an effort with this disc. The film is framed at 4:3 and the sound is vanilla PCM stereo although the many musical extracts are recorded well enough. If like me you are fan of this supreme musician, then you would do better to try one of the many TDK DVD's out there.(read my review of the 1994 Japanese concert.)Paul Smaczny, the film's Director has worked on many occasions with Abbado and obviously knows his subject well though I'm surprised that there are no Mahler extracts in view of the maestro's love of that Composer. As I said at the start the subject matter makes this DVD worth buying, but Arthaus needs to make more effort if it wants to be taken seriously.
