4.0 out of 5 stars The concluding disc in an excellent series from Naxos, 22 Sep 2009
Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792) was an almost exact contemporary of Mozart. Although German by birth he worked for most of his musical career in Sweden. Gluck and Haydn were both influences on him, but his musical style is highly original with lyrical melodies, striking harmonies and complex rhythms. Indeed, no less a figure than Haydn regarded Kraus as a "...genius on the level of Mozart..." (New Grove Dictionary of Music). The lyrical melodies on this disc are perhaps most striking in the 'Largo maestoso' of the 'Symphony in F major' VB 145 and in the 'Larghetto' performed as an alternative, and not quite so 'funereal', slow movement of the 'Symphony in E-flat major' VB144; the latter raises my first problem with this last disc in that it seems a shame that to listen to the alternative movement in context means shuffling between discs 1 and 4 and with over 20 minutes of space free on disc 4 it would have been so much better to present the complete symphony again but with the alternative movement. Another minor grumble regarding disc 4 is in the performance of 'Sinfonia per la chiesa' VB146 in which the opening 'Andante maestoso' seems to have been omitted. However, the symphonies are mostly very well played by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Petter Sundkvist and again the sound quality of the Naxos recording is very good. However, I have not given the disc a 5 star rating because of the above minor grumbles, but also because the performances (especially the slightly pedestrian approach to the 'Sinfonia per la Chiesa') fall short of those recorded on the Capriccio label by the period instrument ensemble Concerto Köln under the leadership of Werner Erhardt; the latter have greater clarity of sound, are truly beautifully played and the quality of recording is just that bit better.

As I said in my reviews of volumes 1 to 3 of this series, if you are not familiar with the works of Kraus, but you do like Mozart, or Haydn, or Beethoven, then you will almost certainly enjoy this CD. It is difficult to understand why Kraus's music has remained overlooked and obscure for so long.
