In my counting this is Kansas's fourth live album and this one is a real treat for the fans. It is simply a chronological journey through their music starting of with Belexes which was actually written before they were called Kansas. Tremendous opener bringing lots of fizz and excitement and played with total conviction. They then jump forward 30 years to play Icarus 2, the premium track of their most recent studio album "Somewhere to elsewhere". Icarus "Borne on wings of steel" gets a welcome airing and proves to be a real crowd pleaser.
Song for America is always on the live set list in the same way that Yes always play "Starship Trooper". Howlin at the moon, an excerpt from "Magnum Opus" and I must admit I feel a little cheated that they didn't play the whole thing, previously recorded live for the "Two for the show" album and I my opinion the greatest opportunity Kansas ever have to showcase their combined talent. The Wall in case you don't know is pure poetry and you always get the feeling that the lyrics were written long before the music. The Preacher again this is Kansas trying to hit every album, taken from the critically aclaimed "In the Spirit of Things" album and considering that Steve Morse was in the ranks at that point you have got to say that even without his fretboard pyrotechnics the song is carried well. Journey from Mariabronn, never quite understood the lyrics but always a personal favorite. The mandatory Dust in the Wind, the philosophical anthem that gave the band recognition world wide, quite popular at funerals I hear. Cheyenne Anthem, simply beautiful, including the obligatory chase sequence or "Benny Hill" passage that they include in so many of their songs. Sweet child of Innocence, Robbie Steinhart takes lead vocals for a very beefy version of this early classic. Disc 2 kicks in with Miracles out of Nowhere, complex layered melodies and counter melodies, delicately mind blowing. Point of Know Return, again always included in the live set because of its profile within the bands history. Portrait / Pinnacle, cleverly combined, technically excellent. Fight Fire with Fire, personally I was delighted to hear this as John Elefante was the vocalist when this was first recorded and the album deserves more recognition than it ever got. More quality from the early eighties with "play the game tonight" would you believe Survivor once covered this song. The main event "Carry on Wayward Son", the best rock riff ever. enough said.
