Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Although German dance trio Toktok formed way back in 1993, it wasn't until they met singer Sophia Larsson Ocklind that they felt compelled to start work on their debut, Toktok Vs. Soffy O. It's easy to see why she so moved them. Her quirky mix of emotionless androidism and sugary sunshine make her the perfect voice for Toktok's, body-popping, euro-trash synth-pop. Together, their monotone melodies and cheap analogue sounds might suggest electro-clash experimentation, especially when played out to gorgeously deep house ("The Lookalikes", "Talkative", "One of These Places") and sleazy basement punk ("A Pointless Life").

But at heart Toktok are passionately retro. With Casio keyboard rhythm tracks and equally hi-tech keyboard sounds, and with electro-disco tracks like "Jean" sounding like they're about to break into Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" or anything by Human League, images of people wearing electric pink eye-shadow and dancing like robots is hard to shift. Yet spectacularly kitsch as Toktok's Depeche-Mode-with-a-smile shtick is, it's scarily addictive, and in a time of super-buffed dance-floor sophistication, their minimalist DIY attitude and angular grooves--as showcased by the sneering "Missy Queen's Gonna Die"--are fantastically refreshing. --Dan Gennoe

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Goodbye to Electroclash, 2 Nov 2003
In the year 2019, a group of scientists will congregate in a laboratory illuminated by flashing strobes and hammer their way through an analysis of Electroclash, the movement that broke a few thousand hearts and uplifted just as many souls in the early 'Noughties. Which Electroclash albums were made to last the course, and which deserved binning five minutes after the hysteria died down? Miss Kittin will be up there, no problems, Adult and Ladytron can count themselves entered into the classic album category and Dopplereffekt will just scrape through the pearly gates on the strength of their early material. Ellen Allien? Jury's out. But bye bye to ARE Weapons, Ping Pong Bitches, DJ Tiga, WIT et al, it was fun at the time but now you're just fading memories. And Peaches, enjoy the mainstream while you can, saddo.

Luckily this CD here falls into the former category, it's a superb slice of electropop that retains a unique individual sound and style. Picks are 'Neighbour' which reminds me of a more freaked-out Soft Cell and the heart-achingly beautiful 'Go', a song about escape, running away 'so you can't even call me on the phone'. Just split up with a partner? Then play this one. But luckily TokTok's sublime music and Soffy O's cynical (but not clinical) vocal style prevent this from descending into twee mush.

Definitely get this album, it's to 2003 what 'Light and Magic' by Ladytron was to 2002, if you get my drift. Don't be scared off by the Electroclash tag, as Toktok vs. Soffy O isn't a result of jumping aboard the bandwagon, they're already miles ahead anyway. And yes, I'll miss Electroclash immensely, even the rubbish bands (for a while at least) but this will serve as a great piece of Nostalgia when I'm senile and dribbling.
