Synopsis
Rapper Memphis Bleek and his Roc-A-Fella crew star in this gritty urban crime drama based on actual events. Determined to make big cash, local Philly thug Beans (Beanie Siegel) forms a gang he dubs the A.B.M. (All 'Bout Money) and declares that all his rivals better "get down or lay down." Bleek, Jay-Z, Omillio Sparks, Freeway, and Damon Dash are some of his friends and enemies along the way. Beans earns plenty of cash, and a nice home in the suburbs for his family, but like all movie gangsters he doesn't know when to quit. The body count rises, his old lady (Sundy Carter) gets kidnapped, and incarceration threatens when a surviving victim decides to rat Beans out to the cops.
First-time director Abdul Malik Abbot smartly eschews any morality, romance or phony glamour in favor of a practical, no-nonsense, sex-and-violence approach. The film's real strength, however, is the naturalistic performances of the actors and their ease with the quotable, expletive-rich dialogue. STATE PROPERTY should delight viewers schooled in rap music and gangster films, but others may find themselves needing subtitles to decipher the thick slang. It's filmed on digital video, blown up to 35mm for theatrical release.

Hmm. I picked this one up a few months ago in a sale, so I was looking forward to checking it out. Unfortunately, after about 5 minutes of viewing it becomes apparent that this one is a turkey, albeit fun in places. I mean, they definitely seem to have the funds to put together a decent flick, but it's the combination of lame acting (esp. by Beanie Segal), sketchy plot and various attempts to titilate the viewer that let this one down. I'd check it out if you're a fan of the featured artists, and there are some great DVD extras like the dancer auditions (!) but otherwise you aren't missing much.

I picked this DVD up mainly because I'm a big fan of Roc-A-Fella artists' music and I wasn't really expecting anything mind-blowingly good. What I got was a fairly run-of-the-mill and predictable gangsta movie, albeit with some surprisingly convincing acting from the main protagonist Beanie Sigel. He plays Beans (I guess they didn't bother thinking up an original name) as he takes his street gang from small time hustlas to big time kingpins, crushing anyone who stands in their way. Along the way Beans encounters Boss (played by Roc-A-Fella co-founder, Dame Dash) who makes Beans realise that the stakes are a lot higher than money and drugs.

It's not clear whether we're supposed to sympathise with Beans or not which I suppose fits in with the film's theme that there are no winners and losers in things like this.

The DVD extras are surprisingly good and substantial and well worth a look.

The one disappointment was that Jay-Z, the biggest star of Roc-A-Fella and the actor given 2nd billing behind Beanie Sigel, is hardly in the movie at all.

All said, this is a fun DVD if you're a rap fan, especially of the artists in here but if not then its only worth a rental or a casual glance.

I kind of agree with the reviewer above. i only gave it this much because i am a fan of roc-a-fella. You would prefer Paid In Full as it does contain proper actors i.e Mekhi Phiffer but I thought it was a good performance on the whole by the main character Beenie Sigel.
